Need help deciding what car to buy

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting so I hope this is the correct place(sorry if it’s not). Anyways I need help deciding what car I should buy. The two options are:

-2020 440i 32,000 miles m-sport package $32,000(private seller)

-2022 330i 15,000 miles m-sport package $31,600(certified preowned from bmw dealership)

This car will be my daily so I need help deciding. I know the b58 is the obviously better engine but the 330i seems like a great deal. If I get the b48, will I regret not getting the b58? Since it will be a daily commuter, should I just get the 330i so I don’t get a taste of what driving the b58 in the 440i would be like?

The 440i being a coupe is no problem for me btw. Also I don’t know if it really matters but the 330i also has premium package 2 and driving assistance package. I don’t know what else the 440i has. Both clean titles

I just have to ask, why limit yourself to these two particular cars? I would figure out what kind of car to buy first, and then look for the best example in your price range - even if you have to get it delivered to travel to pick it up.

You're right about the B58, they're great engines and I'd strongly suggest buying something that ends in '40i for that reason. I know you said you're good with a coupe, but will this only be used for commuting? Do you need to haul stuff, any skiing trips in the winter, dogs to carry etc.? 340i/M340i is a great 4 door sedan with B58, 240i's are a riot little coupes. The X3 M40i is practical and fast small SUV (although I find the seats uncomfortable).

So many great options! Sorry - I know this reply was no help whatsoever . Good luck with your search! Cheers

Garage List
Drive them both.
Figure out if you need 2 or 4 doors.
The answer is what one you like more and suits your life.

Welcome!

Here are several thoughts:

Both engines are good. The 330i is faster than most fast cars from my childhood. The 440i is off the charts faster vs. back then. You’ll certainly do well with either.

The B58 is smoother as well as more powerful. It is well regarded, even when in a large and heavy vehicle.

The gas mileage penalty is minor for the B58 vs, the B48. (An M3 or M4 is another matter, but you’re not shopping for them.)

What is the insurance cost, and can you afford the increased rate (I assume) for the 440i?

Will you get to use the increased power of the B58, if it is primarily a commuter car, presumably in heavy and slow traffic?

Compare the two feature for feature. For that matter, make sure that a feature that you want isn’t missing from either (or both) of them. Run the VINs through one of those websites that tell you all the features. In the case of the 2022, it is possible that one or more items were deleted due to COVID supply issues.

If you are routinely stuck in rush hour stop/and-go traffic on the highway, you may want to buy a car with Driving Assistance Professional Package.

There is something to be said for having four doors and a CPO, including remaining factory warranty. But private sale can also work, and you did mention that two doors works for you. You’re doing your homework by posting here.

You don’t mention if either of them have AWD. Is that important to you? It is to me, since I routinely encounter snow and winter driving conditions.

I love the capaciousness of the cargo room of the four door. I’m a wagon guy at heart. I own a 2025 440i xdrive Gran Coupe.

Finally, is there a reason why you’re down to those two cars? Can you cast your net a bit wider, if neither of them check all your boxes?

Happy shopping!

I like power so I would buy the B58 car. Operating costs are not a concern for me, so the B48 car has no appeal, but if fuel economy is a big issue and you are happy with the performance of the 4 cylinder turbo, then your choice will be different than mine.
