Is this the beginning of the end for Chevy? Very surprising news... |

Can't say I'm surprised. GM doesn't seem to learn.
They continue to do crazy moves like building 4 identical-platform SUV's (Acadia, Enclave, Traverse, Outlook). They need to consolidate these brands.

...at the same time, Dodge is courting buyers for the Viper, plant, name, workers, and all... Saleen and Roush are top names.

What does that have to do with Corvette sales? :iono: Everyone is hurting right now. Even Toyota. Hopefully we'll see a drop in fuel prices that match the drop in oil prices (back below $100/brl as I'm typing this) and consumer sentiment will change a little bit. That combined with the crazy mortgage crisis has a lot of people are scared right now. Dropping cash on something like a 'Vette or Viper (or M3 or M5 for that matter) doesn't seem like a smart move to a lot of them until things settle down. |

Expect more bad news from the auto industry. With today's news of Lehman filing for bk protection, AIG troubles and Merrill bailout by BofA, consumers are going to further hoard cash and sit on the sidelines until this environment changes. Don't hold your breath either...

I understand that brand new Vettes are going for ~$40k on Ebay at this point. If that had been the case 5 months ago I might be posting on the Vette forums right now instead of 1Addics. ![]() |

Its not just GM. Its GM + their suppliers + the UAW all holding hands together. One jumps off the cliff and drags the others down.
These one week shut downs have happened before. Nothing unusual. |

You still don't make any sense. What would you have them streamline about the Corvette? It's been selling well for the last decade. Are you saying they should have gotten rid of it? Or Chevy? :iono: I don't really see where producing Corvettes is a mistake on GM's part, or part of their "general thinking". It's a profitable car in most cases, and the issues right now aren't affecting the Corvette any more than most other $50k two seat sports cars. You're trying to read way too much into it. |

![]() I never said streamline the Corvette brand. If you read my initial post, I was making reference to the poor job GM does handling other brands. This business model forces GM to cannibalize from other divisions. If they fix the other problems....well

Your initial post said that this shutdown was because of "typical GM thinking". I'm not so sure why my question is so hard to understand...what does any of that have to do with Corvette production? What you seem to be trying to say is that because the Pontiac G5 sucks, the Corvette plant has to shut down. It makes ZERO sense. The Corvette's sales have decreased because of the economy. It doesn't have anything to do with platform sharing, or anything else that GM is doing. Most expensive vehicles are seeing sales drops right now. |
