why don't you unplug the negative terminal of the battery and reconnect it and see if that fixes it, because it should.

Have you done any modifications to the stereo or electrical systems? If you haven't it should be covered 100% under warranty, so no biggie.

Press and hold: radio power, CD eject, and DVD eject. This reboots iDrive. It's the BMW version of CTRL-ALT-DEL.

i really think it has something to do with getting power to it. it was working perfect earlier. i thought i checked all the fuses.
when it has no power should the i-drive wheel get real loose?

Did you try the reset I posted? Yes, when iDrive crashes, the wheel spins freely. Also, if you just leave the car off for 20 min and start it again, it will probably boot fine. The reset I posted just shortcuts this.

I tried the reset. how long do you have to hold it in for? I let the car sit over night and still nothing. any other ideas?

if the battery cable is removed would you see these symptoms?

Hold all three buttons down for a second or two and it should reboot. If it doesn't -- and if keeping it off overnight didn't work -- it's not a simple software issue. Time for a dealer trip.
