Since January 8th, my car has been showing the service reminder light, asking for an oil change and brake service. I called my dealer and they said they don't have a loaner available till Feb 12th, which is complete and absolute bullshit. I need a loaner 'cause my car will be in the shop for at least a couple of days because it's going to be detailed and state inspection. I have put a 1000 miles on the car since then, can this be bad for the car?

you're fine. Its just an oil change and it wont hurt by driving extra 1000-2000 miles over 15000. The difference is minimal IMO. But if you're talking about 3000-5000 miles.. then I guess it does make a little bit more difference.

I wouldn't sweat it much. Has it been 15k miles since your last oil change? I usually do one at the mid point (7500 miles) on my own. If you did that or something like that then I definately wouldn't sweat it.

Why don't you just ask them to pay for a rental car for you? It probably won't be as nice as a loaner BMW, but at least you'll be able to get your maintenance done.

Do your service on time! This way 6 months after lease end and have given car back, they wont call you and put a $ 15,000 bill from BMW finance stating you owe them that much because your oil changes affected the car or lack off. The result was sludge found in the engine bay currently! And you'd further save more time / money by getting your lawyers involved . Which is what i'm doing now
As stupid as it sounds, i guess BMW is doing pretty poorly this year in hopes that instead of goverment bail them out they getting there customers to bail them out of this crisis! |

Seriously? When my dealer is out of loaners (always) I get rentals (death traps, actually).

Depends on your driving style. When you first start up the car, it will show you how many miles you have remaining.

I've heard of a few people who's service due indicator indicated 25,000 miles to next service. Needs to be reprogrammed. Yay.

My car is coming up on one year anniversary since BMW last changed the oil (not 15k miles, however). I just called them and said that February 6th was the one year anniversary since they last did the oil change and that I wanted to bring it in on that day and have them do another. They said no problem and thankfully I called enough ahead of time that I'm getting a loaner.
In other words, don't worry about the service indicator. Just do it! I did my own oil change back in August. |

Is that 15000 the car's odometer mileage or the mileage to service? If it's the odometer mileage your mileage to service will probably be 3000 or less (meaning 18000 miles between changes) and you can expect a warning icon soon. If the 15000 is the mileage to service then you have many more miles before needing the oil change and that figure will be dropping all the while in 1000 mile decrements (15000, 14000, 13000, etc.).

Ya know whats weird?
I bought my car NEW in August 08. So in August 09 i will be due for the 1st service. YET, my car build date is Feb 08. That means when my first scheduled oil change is done, my oil will be 1 year and 7 months old! Just found it to be an odd guideline that BMW wants followed. My onboard computer is all screwed up anyways, they saying im due for service in 10k miles or in Feb 2010, er. I currently have 5k miles. Eh doesnt matter since i do my own oil changes every 7500 miles inbetween.

Just curious, why do you think it's BS that they won't have a loaner until 2/12? What do they have to gain by lying about it and what's the big deal over 2 weeks?

I agree that's a bit excessive, 2 1/2 weeks is the max I've ever come across.
