terrible mpg :(

Hi,

ok......so we have had our E90 320D Touring for a couple of weeks now and the combined fuel economy figure (motorway and town) is showing as an average on the OBC of 29.9 MPG.

I mean...........That is utter turd.

Had it connected to a local guys bosch handheld diagnostic thingy and it showed no errors at all apart from the pdc ones at the minute.

What could be causing such poor economy?

MAF?
EGR?

I mean, that is really poor.....right

Any and all help appreciated as i know BMW will fist me for hundreds if i go near them

Regards
Andy

I average around 32.7 mpg with combined driving over a long period in my 335D.

I would say it was bad, even given a little extra weight the touring probably carries, especially if you keep it full of junk!

I dont know what would cause it though!!

Indeed.

I believe mine is well under what I was expecting as a combined average figure!

I spank my car when I want to, and my cruising speeds are not exactly - well you know - but what I am saying is that there are people here getting better MPG than me and driving their cars way harder!

In my case, because I am not a million miles off - it might be because I have a pants driving style that involves bad use of break and accelerator and so its my style that needs to change.

Your MPG is so low I cant see that being the case.

TBH I average 30 around town in the 320d.. But then get 45+ on the motorway.

A heavy right foot goes an awful way towards depleting your diesel very quickly

320d's suffer in the twisty lane around here, but overall with a bit of motorway use 43 mpg no problem, you do know it has 6 gears ?

I'm averaging just under 40mpg with a mixture of town (mainly) and motorway driving in my 320d with ED. Tyres and correct pressures make a difference. Hard acceleration bad for mpg.

I'm averaging 34mpg (over 18k, lots of different styles/conditions)from my 335d, used to get about 42-43 from a 520d. Yours is very low!

Is your car not still under warranty? If so a BMW dealership will check for problems and rectify under warrranty.

My 335i average is not much below yours!!

Is yours an ED model jinjur? My 318d ED is doing early 40's with a mixture of mostly town and a bit of dual carriageway driving.

Thats terrible.

I have the 320i and i normally get 37-40mpg on a combined cycle. That is with pretty steady driving but the occasional bit of foot to the floor stuff.

Recently that dropped to just over 30mpg with a max of 34mpg with a very light foot.

I took in into the dealers and I was told it had a build up of fosfur (not sure of spelling) in the cat converter. After putting it through a cleaning cycle it improved and went back over 40mpg again but soon dropped back down.

Its back in the dealers again next week to have something replaced so hopefully should be ok.

My car is a petrol so i dont know if this applies.

My remapped 330d returns 38 or so, 35 if I'm in a hurry

Have you tried working out the MPG yourself rather than the OBC figure? Might be worth it as it could be the car working it out wrong?

If it really is below 30mpg then somethings definitely wrong

Just as a comparison, I am getting 26mpg from my recently acquired Cayman S

Hi everyone, thanks for the support.............

This car is an Oct 2005 model so is actually out of warranty.

Its not an ED model at all.............but i have been driving like a prude most of the time tbh

I phoned BMW and they said "if there is no error showing there is no problem"

When i asked about the mpg they blamed my driving style, i feel like handing it to them and challenging them to better my figures......rather not pay them to do that though......gits

And not a bad idea MOB, what would also suffice would be everyone letting mye know what mileage they are getting to a full tank if they could....? If i am the same as everyone else on a tank i will be happy enough...

I get 32/34 overall out of a 335d (pre ED and of course auto ) in mixed driving, with 41-42 on a long run. When I had a 320 (manual ED saloon) on loan when my X5 has been in dock, I usually get about 45/47 indicated, over 50 on motorway at 70 ish.

I don't want to state the obvious here, but you have reset the mpg on the obc right?? As someone said above, I'd work it out yourself incase the obc is incorrect - that's utter rubbish mpg from your car!

Surely it has to be something simple and common among us.........

And not just my right foot.

I read somewhere that MAF's have a lifespan of 50K miles. Wonder how true that is and if it could be affecting me at 67K?

We just picked up a similar 320d touring (Dec 2005), the mpg average when we got it was 34 from the previous owner. After a bit of mway driving that's at 37 at the moment. In our old 120d (56) the average was 43 and have had that nearer 50 over a long drive. So i'm a little disappointed but it's early days yet. Also it's cold and that makes things worse (so i've been told).

I'm going to see if i can reset the counter though so i know it's just our driving being taken into account. (i'm not sure it can be reset but i'll give it a go...)

cheers
paul
