Anyone here go to cal poly? I'm thinking about transferring to their architecture school. They were ranked #3 for undergrad by design intelligence..

My daughter graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a degree in music. She now works at an architecture firm as an accountant.

Two of the partners of the company graduated from Cal Poly, and would hire a Cal Poly architecture grad SIGHT UNSEEN.

My opinion: Go for it.

two of my employees are Cal Poly grads. Let me know if you want to talk to them in person.

My take as an employer is that they produce more well rounded graduates than SCI-Arc and USC. They tend to have a right balance of theory and technical talents - more than other graduates I have come across in CA schools.

Great info guys.. Unfortunately I still have to wait another year since cal poly's deadline has long passed. There are some good professors at nytech but there are more retarded ones... Cali would be closer to home also. The price isn't.a concern since pay close to $50k a year for my school..the cost of living in the city is half of my tuition.. But what Would it be like in cali is it ad well connected in the architecture world as nyc? My main reason for being here was to network.

Any other good architecture schools in SoCal? I looked into Woodbury and SciArch but they're a little expensive.

Great school ...but not a sanctioned professional program in architecture as far as I know. They have an "Environmental Design" program which is kick ass.

I visited Art Center but didn't like it much. And it's pretty expensive too.

My wife was in the architecture program at Cal Poly Pomona a little over 10 years ago. I was at Cal Poly at the same time as an accting major, so I saw what she went thru. Although the program was no joke, the profs and group of people were close knit and great. Of course, this was a while ago.

Good luck.

Woodbury is also good and has come a long way in the past few years.
I can not say if it's better than Cal Poly or not, though. Definitely not as well-known which may or may not pose a problem in your resume.

Yes, Cal Poly Pomona is the sister school, I am an alumni. Most people in this area will specify Cal Poly Pomona or Cal Poly SLO, not just Cal Poly. Cal Poly Pomona is actually the bigger school enrollment wise. Cal Poly SLO has a higher exposure nationally due to the fact they are D-1 in sports and they are the more prestigious of the two schools.

Cal Poly Pomona has it's benefits though, being it's right in the middle of the LA area and it's a very good state school, though not as prestigious as SLO.

I'm an Electrical Engineering graduate, but know the architechture program is pretty damn good. According to this article:

http://www.architectmagazine.com/ind...ticleID=602885

Cal Poly Pomona is ranked 15th nationally in architecture, while Cal Poly SLO is 4th.

great info, whats the GPA like for acceptance? I'll probably be applying with like a 3.6 or .7 with >100 90 credits (30 from University of Washington and 60 from NYTech, my current school... btw, I checked Design intel. and Cal Poly SLO is ranked 3rd for 09.

Are you applying out of High School ??

When my daughter applied, she was only one out of 3 kids that got accepted. She knew of at least 50 that had applied.

It's definitely a lot easier to transfer in than to get accepted as a freshman. Good luck.

Thanks! I'll be doing some more research and see if transferring is the best way to go after this school year is over. If so, I will most likely start preparing to transfer during the summer and turn my application in for early decision.

AFAIK, this is still the case: Cal Poly students are accepted into their declared major - you start taking your major's classes as a Freshman. If you haven't taken any architectural classes, you'll be behind the other students. My daughter even had to audition to be accepted as a Music major. One of her friends had to bring down her portfolio to get accepted into graphic design.

Again, Good Luck !!

Yeah I'm aware of that. I'm on my second term for design, by the time I apply, I'll be in 2nd year design and will have taken computer drafting etc, I hope all my studio/ design courses will transfer, it should since my school is accredited by the NAAB for B.Arch

hey im in the program right now. im in the second quarter of 2nd year. we are in the top 15 in US last time i heard. and i believe we just renewed our accreditation last year. i think the school is a bargain. ill be honest though that its hard for us to get what we need facility wise but our instructors are great. one of them actually worked on the caltrans building. most of them worked for popular architects if im not mistaken. one of the part time instructors used to design for redbull. he used to be behind huge redbull parties and designed everything for it. yeah our instructors are chill.
