BMW Headlights - Do they all work??

This is probably a really dumb question .. but anyway!

On my car i can only get the 2 outer lights to work and cant find any way to get the 2 inner lights to work!

When i put the sidelights on the angel eyes come on all 4 lights, but when i turn the lights on be in dipped or full beam only the outer lights work.

Is this normal?? I cant believe that the 2 inner lights are for decoration only.

I want to call the dealer tomorrow - but dont wanna come across as mental when i speak to him!

Think the inner lights are your DRLs... Think they also light up when you 'flash to pass' or pull back on the turn signal stalk.

Thats the thing .. i thought they might be for the 'flash' thing .. but mine do sod all!

Hmm.. time to pop to the dealer ... dont think the lights are pointing in the right place on the car as it seems to light up the pavement more then the road ahead!

Hahaha But no, I meant, Just being a sod really, theres 3 levels via a roller switch by the light switch that change the vertical alignment. Is that all the way down? Sure you've checked it.. but just incase (Atleast there is on mine)

Not sure if your coupe is the same as my E91 with xenons? When I flash the mains when no other lights are on the inner two light up. You cannot 'flash' the xenons as this would cause long term damage and shorten the life of the bulbs. If I have xenons on and flash or switch to mains the outer two light up as the xenons angle upwards for greater illumination.

No manual adjustment with xenons. Done with sensors on the front and rear track arms

Aha Carrerasr ... i think you might have sussed the whole 'do my lights work' thing!

Still think i need to visit my dealer to have the lights glanced at as there is no manual adjustment as you said.

Cheers gents!

There aren't any headlights in the inner units, just the light for the rings. The outer lights are bi-xenon. An electric plate or something switches between dipped and main beam.

Bit of a swizz really..

When your main lights are on, the inner lights also light up when you turn the wheel a lot, throwing a little light to the side of the car. Very helpful for making 90 degree turns onto ramps in pitch dark car parks.

I believe on all E92s and the LCI E90s the inner lights are cornering lights. The light on the relevant side will light up when you have your turn signal on below a certain speed or turn the steering wheel a certain amount. They both light up when you go into reverse too. As you are in the UK, this feature is probably an option so if you don't have it fitted, the inner lights may just do nothing!

The bi-xenon setup has low and high beams in the same unit, including the flashers. However, the pre-LCI E90s had halogen bulbs in the inner lights for flashers and in the US and Canada these also functioned as daytime running lights.

Hope this helps

+1. However, I don't believe they turn on just by putting the turn signal. They turn on when you are driving AND doing a turn. If you are standing still and move your steering wheel they won't turn on.

In summary, unless you have adaptive lights, the inner lights on the e92 and e93 are for the DRL only. The centres of these lights do not light up. Flashing is actually done by flashing the D1S xenon bulb. This is different on the e90 and e91 with xenons as the inner lamp has an H7 halogen bulb but no H8 DRL.

I agree with Xenon above, and Willhollin confirming that he agrees with xenon's agreement that he agrees with me. Overall, I think generally, we are in agreement (I think)
