LOL - that bluefin slows you down, take it off. I'll be onto superchips in the morning. Was told they would have it in January and had almost given up. Yep BMW comes up on the site..

Interesting technology, I'm assuming that superchips have made the system so that it can only do so many writes to an ECU. If not then what's to stop someone buying a bluefin device for say a 330D and remapping everyones car on a forum meet? I must be missing something

You do miss the obvious. You buy this standard thing, connect it up to your ECU; and it will generate a specific code (based on chassis number or do I know what). With that code you contact superchips, and you'll get a calibration which will only go onto that ECU. If you want to purchase a second hand bluefin that's stupid - Superchips wil charge you the full price for the calibatrion..

Does this mean you can remove the map yourself when the car needs to go into a dealer?

Thats the exact reasoning behind it.....

And AFAIK, if you buy a second hand one, then Superchips only charge you a certain amount to use it on your car.......does work out cheaper as far as i know and that was for a Mini so bound to be same for bimmers.

Would be interesting to see how it compares to the spider.

The spider would have the edge as far as removing and selling as the bluefin is programed for each individual vehicle.

If you place and remove maps via the ECU, will there be any evidence of a map ever being there?

On their website, they quote:

Original bhp : 286
Original nm : 580
BHP increase : 47
NM gain : 88
Lb/Ft gain : 65

How does this compare?

If its anything like the REVO PS2 and PS3 plug and play boxes, you can use it on any compatible car, but you have to remove (upload) it off the previous car first.

It remembers whether it last downloaded or uploaded, so you after you;ve programmed your car, you could upload it out and program someone elses car, but only 1 at a time.

Simple really, so its just a standard product.

They couldn't give a toss who's car its on, as long as its only 1 car! Revo do a self-deleting free 6 hour trial program too - do superchips offer that?

As previously stated Bluefin is mated to your cars ECU and chasis number to ensure no pirating takes place.

The Bluefin is basically just a switching and storage device, you upload the remap via the serial port and your OEM map is stored on the unit, if you fancy switching back to standard you just reverse the process.

Some ECU do track updates via a check sum but not sure if this is the case with BMW but I have had this device on various VW and Audi applications and it was never discovered with routine servicing.

The biggest advantage of Bluefin is the ability to carry out your remap via post/e-mail, personally I'd visit the HQ in bucks (MK18) to get the personal service plus free before and after RR.

If you have a second hand unit SC allow a 30% reduction in price and usually a 10% - 15% discount for Forum members so don't forget to mention it.

I had Bluefin on my Focus ST.

It was excellent, to be honest, and I would recommend it for ease of use, etc.

I suppose you`re never going to beat a bespoke map, perfectly matched to your car, that some of the other tuners offer, in tandem with a rolling-road session, but as hand-held units go, I found the Bluefin to be excellent.
