Upgrading a Steptronic?
So... I've heard good things about the ShiftTronic automatics in Alpina cars...
Is it just a Steptronic with upgraded software? Would it be possible to upgrade a Steptronic in a non-Alpina BMW, basically doing a Steptronic remap/upgrade? Note: I'm just thinking out loud, not intending on really doing it... I'd just like to know if it could be done... Not that there is anything wrong with the standard Steptronics, they're actually quite good for a classical A/T with a torque converter... |

The Alpina Switchtronic system is exactly the same as the BMW Steptronic system, in that it uses the same 6HP19TU ZF automatic gearbox as the 335i. However, instead of using paddles, Alpina stitch buttons into the back of the steering wheel, to enable manual change of gears. In addition, Alpina have made a slight alteration to the programming of the ZF gearbox ECU. However, you won't be able to find out the differences, as it's difficult to download the data of the gearbox ECU. There is a guy in Germany who specialises in it, but the cost is considerable and for negligible gain.
