Weird noise from engine bay
Ok, I searched and did see one post on this noise from 11/08, but no vid and no resolution. Anyway, after the car is off for about 45-60 minutes this weird screeching noise happens intermittently from the left front of the engine. I'll send these vids along to the dealer in hopes of them knowing what it is without me leaving my car there for days, or weeks. Here's some links to the videos, any thought are definitely welcome:

You didn't wanna just get a tripod instead of standing there for 45 minutes? That shit sounds funny, not trying to be disrespectful please tell us what it is, my car never made that noise

I don't know what that is--let me say it up front. But, if I had to guess, I'd say it is some type of valve letting off pressure as the engine cools--perhaps a thermostat or radiator cap. Don't know much about the various valves associated with the turbos.

Ha! I've heard the same thing...scared the bejesus out of me the first time it happened as I was leaning down swapping my DVs back in (spring change).
It only happens after the car has been sitting for about 30+ minutes...it sounds almost electrical in nature...or somewhat like a high pressure release/leak (think : letting the air out of a highly inflated balloon a tiny bit at at time). I never managed to trace it. It sounds like it's coming from the alternator to me, though that makes zero sense. I can safely rule out the charge pipe as I had my diverter valves out when it happens (zero pressure there). Radiator cooling off/fluid return from the overflow tank? Close proximity there to the top hose. Fuel return? Fuel pump depressurizing? Dunno at this point but glad to hear that someone else has heard this bizarre sound too. |

Well, I suppose it's good not to be the only person in the boat. I'll hit up my service manager again and see if he'll send it to the engineers for a view. I find it highly unlikely they've not heard it and don't know what it is since there is more than one person out there...Problem being they like to keep this intermittent crap secret for some reason.

never heard that one before and my head has been buried in the engine bay for countless hours. Maybe I just ignored it, this car makes all types of weird noises.

well the noise recorded by the OP is amplified because of the microphone, its really not that loud, almost sounds like someone passing gas/ fart!!!

You're correct about the level of the audio, if the hood is closed, you have to have your head right next to the grill to hear it. I don't think it much of an issue because if it was I'm sure my car would have blown up by now....

IF you and I are the only one hearing this, then it would be a problem, but I heard it from the first day I brought the car home admiring the engine bay and I heard this gas screeching noise and heard it ever since...You have to realize alot of people shut their cars off and leave it alone, I usually shut the car off and mess with the engine, check it all mods are okay, clean the engine etc!!!

+1 After any new tweak, I'm always under the hood checking things out and this usually happens 10 to 30 minutes after a drive. It won't happen if the car has been sitting an hour. Sounds pretty normal based on the feedback received here. |
