+1 They should have allocated more for music... I guess I can't complain though, I haven't even used it all up with my music yet.

Where do you think the nav data and operating system live? all the data that used to be on those nice double sided dvds is now on the HD - a large part of the reason why the performance is so snappy on the new nav.

Partitions are:
65GB (max) Navigation 12GB Entertainment Server 4GB CDDB (Gracenote) 2GB System 500MB Contacts 500MB Speech Originally the Entertainment partition was only 8GB so the extra 4GB must have come from the Navigation partition bringing it down to 61GB.

There are four means to get music played (discounting the radio which no longer plays music) in the car. You can use the CD drive, an iPod, the entertainment segment of the HDD, or external HDD or solid-state thumb drive for music. It seems the maximum usable sized thumb drive is 8GB. I have a 16GB that won't get recognized by the car.

SoYank: Do you have the rest of that document you attached? If so, can I get a copy?
I'm trying to figure out if I'll be able to get my Japanese spec navigation to work in Australia if I take the car with me when I go home. Previous versions of iDrive had additional H/W installed in order to make them work in Japan which also rendered them pretty much useless outside the country. I've had a look through my car and couldn't find anything additional. I'm hoping that it's just a software thing with the new CIC and that the GPS will work overseas. |

Sorry, I was only given the one page when the service department was looking into how to get European maps on my car.

My theory is that document was prepared fairly early in the process and software/programming later allowed for more music storage.
Here is a picture of my screen showing a total of 12,500 MB total Music Storage area. 2009 E90 M3 (10/2008 production). Mike Last edited by mdernst; 06-18-2009 at 04:29 PM.. |

When the service advisor gave me the page I posted in #10 above he said that the partition for music had been updated to 12 GB and so he marked it on the page.
Even though that page and Technic's .pdf both say the disc is a total of 80GB, is it possible that this has been increased without any fanfare?

I just ordered a Patriot 64GB Flash Drive from Newegg 2 days ago. It came yesterday and I loaded up a copy of my iTunes library on it and it works like a charm.
Right now I only have 10.2 GB of music on the drive, but it plays just fine. I used Tunebite to convert my purchased music. I just keep this plugged into my center console. Originally, I was going to buy a used iPod to keep in the console, but this is cheaper than even an 8GB Nano. |
