Can you repair a run flat?? / Tyre Costs
Got a punchure warning the other day and sure enough there is a nail in the middle of the tyre. I understamd that they can't be repaired (Even though Michelin say they can once). Has anyone had a repair done if so where?
Been quoted £212 for a new Michelin RFT on the front, is this a good price? |

The $tealers will always say you must replace it and will not repair them. I successfully repaired mine after my local tyre fitter examined the tyre and did it. It really depends on how far you have driven on it while its flat and where the nail is.
I believe Michelin now state officially you can repair them once only. Can anyone confirm that? |

I've had one repaired and drove another 15K miles without any problems. The important bit is whether you have driven them flat or not. With my puncture I hadn't.

The position regarding puncture repairs to run-flat tyres is muddled. Most tyre manufacturers state that their run-flat tyres should not be repaired under any circumstances. The reasoning behind this is that when a run-flat tyre is punctured the weight of the car is supported by the specially strengthened sidewalls. These are designed to carry the weight of the car and withstand speeds of up to 50 mph for a limited distance. However the exact nature of the damage, the speed at which it occurred and the distance subsequently driven are all factors that would effect the internal integrity of the tyre and it’s subsequent safe use of the tyre following a repair. As these “known unknowns” represent a serious safety issue the policy is that repairs are prohibited. If a run-flat is not driven on while fully deflated, it can often be repaired.

When the fitters looked at mine they specifically looked inside the tyre to check for cracks or splits. If they were any cracks they said they would not be able to repair it. It was fine so they did their magic and I drove away only £15 lighter.

My father repaired loads of runflats in a 535d. So it can be done. Still got few 18" tyres in the garage if anyones interested.

I had a large metal staple of some sort in the middle of the tread of the front left tyre (19" Bridgestone) - the body shop manager noticed it whilst quoting for replacing the front wing
The tyre wasn't deflated but after pulling it out when I got home I noticed it was bubbling slowly - a v slow puncture. Drove it round to the nearest tyre fitter - he drilled a hole in the tyre, plugged it, charged me £15 - still going strong 600 miles later... |

I've tried several places, none will do a repair and none will fit a tyre from somewhere else (i.e. one you buy or get repaired somewhere else) I'd scrap all 4 RFTs and buy a set of 4 Falken FK452's for under £400. Else £180 ish is about right for a 225/40/ZR18 PS2 RFT if that's your size? |

Their list for 2 x 225/40/ZR18 and 2 x 255/35/ZR18 FK452's is £428 fitted and balanced at your location (nationwide converage). They agreed to do it for £400 for all four (just over 5% off) I've used them before - v good outfit. |
