DIY or Stealer for rear brake pads?

The stealer quoted me £170 odd quid incl vat to fit rear pads.. but I thought id enquire at a local Beemer independent specialist and see if they could re-set the i-drive if id fit pad myself… they said no probs so I picked up pads and sensor wire from BMW £91 all in…

I fitted rear pads today on the beast and it took me the best part of 2, 1/2 hours… by the time I got all the kit outa the garage and striggled with a seized on wheel & removed the inner wheel arch to fit the sensor? Plus I’ve still gota call by the local garage and chuck him x amount to reset the i-drive…

I’m now thinking the Stealer was a better deal? This must be a 1st….

Hi Tony,

Sounds like you had a bad day of it mate - shouldn't have been that hard but it was still a major saving on the stealer.

Why don't you reset the system yourself? If the service reminder was saying the rear pads needed changing then you should be able to. Try the following:

1) Insert key.
2) Press start/stop button (without depressing clutch/brake), wait for service reminder to disappear.
3) Immediately after the service reminder goes out, press and hold the odometer reset. After 3 secs a warning triangle should appear, keep the odo. button pressed and after another 2-3 seconds the Oil can symbol will appear.

Note: If you hold the odo. button too long you will get some German writing and the CAN Bus/software level will appear. If so, press the start/stop button to switch off and start procedure again.

4) If you have succeded you will be in the service menu. Use the toggle switch on the indicator stalk to scroll up/down the menu through the various service items.
5) When you have the item you want to reset showing, press the BC button on the end of the indicator stalk. 'Reset' should now appear in the display. Press in and hold the BC button for 2-3 secs and a clock will start going around and that should be it.
6) Press the start/stop button to exit.
7) Press the start/stop button and check the service information in i-drive.

It's worth a shot and might save some more dorayme.

If you press ^^*# whilst holding your breath then you get extra credits and extended game play

Cheers Mark... I have tried that cheat before on my old 1 series... and ended up with german for game over? but will try again... defo worth a punt! nice one!!!

Tony i was quoted £104 supplied and fitted by a Independant BMW specialist surely £91 for pads seems a lot when your doing them yourself

I would always advise using genuine pads - this is from an (ex) man in the trade.

Pads and sensor from dealers delivered to home £77 all in. I had already made sure wheels were not seized on and applied a little copperslip.

What is the best way to get a wheel off if its seized on? Mine wouldn't budge last time I tried to get them off.

Jack up wheel... leave one or two studs in but loose... then basically kick tyre at opposed sides... or use a soft mallet on tyre.... dont hit wheel as this may cause damage...

Around the £15 mark full price was £16.70 plus vat.

A dead-blow hammer works better than a soft mallet but you do need to aim for the tyre.

Try the diy section for reset just had my rear pads done by indy also got him to strip and clean out hand brake shoe a the noise was doin my head !in

I just don't trust stealer with car any more on first oil service told them about noise from back wheel and handbrake not holding to good when i picked car up ask if check was told needed new rear pads (17000 miles ) so left there phoned Indy £35 later no rear pads just cleaned and serviced hand brake shoes. 10000 mile later and rear pads were low not showing on computer yet so just changed them anyway stealers are just out to robb you

instead of using a dead blow hammer, just gently raise and lower the car a couple times - loosened mine wheels a treat!

I changed my pads and reset the service light for the pads. Now the car is showing a warning light indicating the pads have worn out and the mileage remaining is showing as -----

I think the sensors need replacing. I will try replacing them and then try the reset again.

Mine was same changed sensor and was fine didn't even have to reset again just fitted sensor

I have unplugged the sensor part from the brake pad and tied it back so that it does not wear out. I will then just change the pads myself - without sensor - when I see they are done (visually).

I was looking into this to save a little money and hassle but the service manual says that the sensor is one fit only and that the spring clip is damaged on removing and will no longer hold the sensor in place.

Ahh no that is rubbish. It is a small 'c' shaped spring. It can be bent into shape easily if it is not a tight fit when replacing the sensor.
