Got speeding ticket in VT, need some advice.
So after all these years driving back/forth from Killington, VT I finally got a speeding ticket. I was definitely past due... so I didn't think to fight it. 88 in a 65, $220.
But on the ticket, he wrote my name as John... when clearly my name is Jonah. I wasn't planning on fighting it until I saw this. Think they might call the ticket faulty and throw it out? I mean.. who's this John character? ![]() |

In Pennsylvania that mistake could be easily fixed by the officer amending the citation at the hearing. Bringing it up as a reason for the citation to be thrown out would probably just make you look like a dick. You are much better off asking for a hearing, telling the judge how it was your first offense, you realize what you did was wrong, apologize, tell the judge the officer was polite and courteous, and ask for the charge to be reduced to a violation which carries a minimum fine and/or no points. Again, this is for PA where I used to be a cop. I'm sure the rules of criminal procedure for amending citations are similar in VT, but you should check.

Talk about profiling! - VT 5-0 loves:
1) out of state license plates 2) european cars 3) ski racks on top 4) "colored folk" JP, having the wrong first name won't get you off the hook, but having a wrong drivers license # or license plate # might... I've been pulled over a few times in VT, and have never been issued a "warning". One time, we were in a Skimarket BUS, doing 25 in a 20, and the cop pulled the bus over in the center of town, and made the entire bus wait for about 30 minutes, and eventually gave the bus driver a ticket for 5mph over.. The bus driver was so pissed off, he got on the PA system to tell us all he'd just been royally screwed by some "hill-billy cop". So much for trying to support Vermont Tourism.. I don't think the VT registry is tied into ours, so there was no insurance surcharge..

NH is also famous for this... I almost got one last year in NH. Driving through one of the towns, I was going probably 10 miles over the limit. The cop was parked in a strip mall. As I came up on him he flashed his headlights at me and I slowed down. I went by him and just a looked over and acknowledged that I was going too fast and he didn't come after me. I guess he was probably just sitting there having his coffee.

I got two speeding tickets in VT while I went to school in Albany, NY. VT does not report tickets to the DOT of out of state drivers nor the insurance company if you simply pay it.
I don't think you should worry about it, just pay it.

The highway in VT probably shouldn't even have a speed limit. It's offensive that the speed limit is so low. Last time I went to Montreal I was cruising at about 100 the whole way.

+1 that VT should NOT have speed limits. If it hasn't changed in the last 3 years, my family members in MA have gotten tickets in NH and it doesn't show up. MA doesn't share info.
I think that description applies to all cops. I had to get the most similar tag to SC when I went down for school and get a custom one for the numbers to look like theirs. Since then, I haven't been asked "What are you doing down here?" once. It was also a good damn excuse to take off the front ![]()

They upped the amount they were patrolling on parts of I89 the last month or so, after they announced that five police cars had been hit this winter. If you pay it, it goes away. If you fight it, you're going to have to take time off and drive up to whatever town and argue with someone, likely more than once. Is $220 worth it?
I got a ticket in Charlestown NY once. Middle of nowhere between Saratoga and Amsterdam, NY. I was doing about 13 over, while going down a hill. I just paid it, I didn't see how driving out there and wasting time and money came out in my favor. It never got sent to VT DMV, so whatever. If it were in state, I'd probably fight it, but... eh. Besides, I89 *should* have speed limits. That way you're not doing 100 when you hit the pothole/frost heave/frost dip. They're helping you save your rims! ![]() |
