tips on wet-sanding?

hey i plan on reparing a little chip about a half an inch long i bought some touch up paint and a paint brush a #2 artist brush (according to autopia this is the best one to use) anyway i know it'll leave the surface uneven and want to correct that. So does anyone have any tips on how to properly wet sand an area? i heard 1500-2000grit is the best option but i don't know i never really understood the whole grit thing .

I'm just guessing i'll need to wet the area with some soapy water like ONR and then drip the sand paper in water? any help would be greatly appricated

Here is a link, but you might want to practice on an old or damaged panel first. Make sure to read the "risky" part at the end of the link. If done wrong your problem will be much bigger.
