Excessive Washing?

Ive been told by my idiot neighbors that I clean my car much to often and that im going to ruin the paint on my car or wear out the protective couting on the rims. is this possible? how many times a month do you guys wash your cars (not wax)?

and what do you do when you spent a whole day detailing your car then the next morning theres dust on it - then the next day again and again?

thanks

california duster. fuck the neighbors...do what you want. If you do it properly there are no negative affects on the paint.

As long as you wash it properly you should be alright.

Ive never used the cali car duster but when my car is only dusty i just use
a quick detailer on it.

I wash weekly and sometimes if I am going somewhere special I'll wash before that as well if it's been a few days. My neighbors just stare when I wash all my cars back to back(5). Anyhow second on the dust issues I use PoorBoys Spray and Wipe if only dust is there, and of course a good MF towel.

I wash weekly, polish/sealant monthly and bi-annually (before/after winter Oct & Mar) I use a scratch/swirl remover followed by polish/sealant.

Do what you like F the rest and watch others

Wash it once a week. Don't obsess about dust or bad weather in between -- you'll clean it again next wash. Clean bird droppings and sap when you notice them, though. Polish and seal a couple of times a year.

Poor wash technique may swirl your clear, but in general, washing more often will save your paint, not harm it.

You're neighbors are clueless. Wash it as much as you want as long as you're doing it right. I usually do once a week when the weather is good. If it gets a little dirty in between I don't worry about it. If it's heavily dirty, I'll give it an in between wash.

Great posts. Do what you want. I would NOT use the california duster though. You are asking for problems if you use this IMO. Wax once a month or so. You will be able to tell when you need to wax the car. Use the proper techniques when washing. George from DI has a nice post on this. Read through this and you should be fine.

Good call on the duster....I totally agree. I threw mine away after the first time I used it. I also agree on the proper wash techniques.

OP: how often you wax really depends on certain things...such as if your parked outside or inside, how often you drive, what kind of weather you drive in. Since you wash your car so often, it's simple to tell if you're losing product simply by how your water beads on the car.

+1 with normturn (and all the others as well). I wash weekly and use proper, non-abrasive techniques (it's mandatory with Black Sapphire). Washing not only helps protect the paint but prolongs your LSP.

Looks like we all got those kinds of neighbors. Either they are lazy to wash their cars weekly or they just don't care about it.

I love my California Duster. Use it practically every morning. See, there's your problem. They need to be "broken in". Once you use it a couple times, it stops putting extra wax on the car. You just lightly brush it across the top to get rid of the light dirt. Leaves a nice, clean finish.

I thinks there's even instructions with it that say to leave a new one on some newspaper. It'll leach off the extra wax when it's new. After that, it works great!

Think about it. When you have dust on your car, and you make a pass with the CD, that dust is still there as you wipe over the rest of your car. And if you use it every morning like you do....you're basically wiping your car with a "dusty duster". there's no way I will do that to my car. What are you supposed to do....shake it? Are the dust particles supposed to re-distribute themselves throughout the duster? Do you wash it?

Hey if it works for you, then that's fine. But it will never touch my car again.
