stone chips

the front bumper spoiler and now the bonnet are covered in tiny stone chips, i dont do a lot of m way driving and i certainly dont drive up peoples backsides so i dont understand why i am getting so many stone chips cars done 19,000 miles. my old 320 e36 has twice the mileage and you can count the chips on that on one hand. any ideas?

The paint now used is very very soft, and the lacquer isn't tough enough to stand up to very much. You'll find you'll get many more stone chips now than on previous generation cars. Not a lot you can do except get the front end repaired then have a Paintshield film applied. Click the review in my sig for details

Also seems to be the design of the front end. My Mazda6 had much less stone chips, the BMW needs its mirror caps, bumper and bonnet resprayed at some stage to bring it back to new. Some seriously deep, long and fine stone chips!

Got a large amount on mine also, and silver being one of the hardest to repair perfectly. Will be looking into the painshield as recommended by Mr Moderator () when I get it repaired and detailed for the upcoming summer.

Mine looks like it has been grit blasted with all the road salt of recent weeks. Being Carbon Black and a white base coat it looks worse than it needs to. I understand the water based paints are thinner and the lacquer is more brittle than previous models. I also need a full front end respray to bring it back. The windscreen isn't looking too good either.

mines silver, touched a few in with a stick but its very difficult to do a proper job, def dont use the brush with the kit, buy a very fine one from a model shop, and thin the paint a little this stops it going on in a big dob. silver tends to separate quickly and never seems to match, grey may be better.

That's not bad, but spraying that size of area requires a perfect finish. I paid a bit more than that for mine, but I did do the mirror caps, whole bonnet, bumper and wings.

Bear in mind that after painting you should budget around £800 or so for the paintshield film, otherwise the car will get all the stone chips back again very soon and that will render your repaint totally pointless and a waste of money.
