Tyre Advice

Hi

Looks like i've got a slow puncture in my run flat £330 for a new one?!?!

Anyway my question is if the other rear tyre has 6-7mm left is it advisable to replace both rears or will it be fine just to do just the one?

6-7 mm is nearly new, just get the one.

I thought you could repair a RFT??? As long as the issue isn't within an inch of the edge of something???

I'm sure if you do a search on here you'll find some threads containing this. Some people would advise against it I'm sure but I'd probably give it a whirl. If it goes again you've got the safety of the RFT still haven't you (I appreciate there are loads of varying factors here).

Why not just get it repaired?

If it's a slow puncture then presumably you haven't driven on it flat, so a repair is fine if it's in the central area of the tyre.

If you've driven on the tyre when it is fully deflated then it should not be repaired. Otherwise a repair is fine, so long as the patch is on the flat part of the tyre (i.e. same criteria as for a normal tyre repair).

There is a lot of misinformation about and many branded outlets will not repair RFT's, but there is no reason not to do this and the manufacturers own websites acknowledge this.

After recent drivers side pothole incident my rear is new but on the nearside I've got about 4.5 mm - am seriously considering replacing that one too as the car is veering left and right under acceleration/deceleration - have had it checked fully on a hunter machine and that's all fine so suspect I am feeling the effect of 7mm of difference in the diameter of the tyre....

I had my RFT repaired which was just as well as it only had 1000 miles on it and a new one was £330 if it could be found. Fortunately it was a slow puncture and I did not drive on it deflated - therefore it can be fixed like a normal tyre.

However, as the tyre outlets do not know how far it has been driven with no pressure they cannot tell if the sidewall is damaged hence they generally have a blanket policy not to repair for fear of litigation. I went to lots of places with what was in effect a virtually new tyre but they all refused point blank to fix it, even if I offered to sign a waiver absolving them of responsibility.

Luckily an acquaintance works in one of the leading outlets and he did it as a favour.

I have heard of others getting RFTs fixed with less trouble.

I had a 19" Bridgestone RFT repaired, (repaired one on my son's mini as well) had to try a couple of places before I found someone to agree to do it, but it worked fine and gave me another 3000 miles. This was for a slow puncture that I spotted once it got down to 25psi. I had another puncture which I drove on at 20mph for 2 miles and the tyre was wrecked, the sidewall had had it.

Following all those punctures 8000 miles back I changed the set to NRFT and took out tyre insurance insurance for about £190......fingers crossed

I've also got a slow puncture! TPM came on, I checked all the tyres when they had cooled down and one was down to 27psi.

I put 34psi back in it and not needed to use the car today and it's down to 31! First thing I'm doing tomorrow is going to get it repaired, but now reading this thread I might find it difficult. Really don't want to have to get a new tyre, only done 2000 miles....

Unfortunately, you will need to do a lot of ringing round in order to find someone who will repair it, but they do exist.

Maybe we should have a sticky with a list of repairers?

Formula 1 Auto Centre repaired my son's mini's run flat, but wouldn't do my 335d's 19"
I managed to get Hi Q to do mine, they had a real struggle to get the tyre off due to the low profile and very narrow side wall, but once off it was a standard repair as the puncture was in the middle of the tread. They wouldn't do the second puncture since the side wall was scuffed inside and they were not able to judge if the damage was superficial or the carcass had been damaged. I totally agreed with them and then started on the long trail to replace the tyre. No Bridgestones in the country, only BMW could get them and they wanted £350 each. They couldn't say when they would be available and offered me a corsa hire car to drive since mine was imobilised! Ended up changing full set to Non- Run flat and have been happy with the change once I got the pressures set up to my liking.

I am now using 'proper' tyres and cost just over £1k for all four. No runflats for me now.

Tyreweld, compressor and a plug kit which has impessed the guys at the tyre place. It has pliers to pull the nail out and screw in plugs which is cut off when fully screwed in.

I've managed to find a place that will attempt to repair for cash! But luckly they also have a tyre in stock (Bridgestone RE050A 255/30 R19).

He did say some law etc etc about you shouldn't repair a run flat!

We will see this afternoon!

Should have accepted the repair and flogged it on eBay. You'd have got £100.

Certainly will and they probably charged Kal £10 for "environmental disposal" to boot.

Don't sell it on fleabay, go and get it and advertise it here, won't take long to sell it (I sold mine for £75 delivered) and it'll cost you nothing
