Yeah...zip. Nada. Zilch. I think it has something to do with the software and conflicting issues with the US DOT. Too bad though...I thought DVD movies would've worked.

Instead of DVD's purchased here, what if you stuck in a DVD from Germany?

I was told by the dealer that if I tried, it would cost thousands of pounds to remove it, as it would possibly jam in the system.

Ha ha nice try! No, it won't play movies. The DVD navi system software has been programmed to block .ifo and .vob DVD movie files. You can't get them to play. Maybe someday someone will come up with some kind of add on you can splice into the system somehow to over ride it, but there's nothing now. I don't know about other car models, but before BMW I was looking into Lexus and the IS couldn't play DVD movies on the Navi, either.

Did you see that big screen you can have installed for the back seat passengers? You can install that and that will play DVD movies, but I saw it was only available in Deutschland and for like $3000.00 American bucks.

I had an old clarion DVD player in the car before my 3-er and all I had to do was find the "shut off" wire and ground it and bingo! The screen stayed on even after I shifted into drive.

I'm sure they'll come up with something eventually, if you want to get into modding the $2000 navi system...

I've noticed something peculiar about this issue. For anyones information, I HAVE tried to stick a DVD in the navi AND cd drives. It didn't get stuck in there, but it also didnt play.

What is interesting is that if you put an audio cd in the cd drive, theres an option on idrive that allows you to switch from CD to DVD. however, the DVD option is grey, so you can highlight it but cannot select it. Even when my navi DVD is in the drive, the DVD option still cannot be selected. If the navi DVD drive was never meant to allow DVDs to be played, why is this option even in the iDrive screen? Another interesting thing is in the manual. It clearly states how to clean DVDs before use and to not use copied DVDs as they may damage the system. I know this could easily pertain to dirty/pirated navi DVDs, but it is still VERY PECULIAR. Also, how many times are people gonna update their Navi DVDs? Im thinking, not very often, so im wondering why they make the drive for it so accessible. Im pretty sure there is a way to play DVDs on that damn screen and im gonna find out how. Im gonna make a trip to a few car audio specialists and see what they can find out.

I saw the DVD option when playing audio CD's during my ED. But I couldn't figure out what that meant.

When you say, it plays music DVDs OK, do you mean DVD-A? What format is the music on the DVD you are playing?

Does anyone know what the DVD option is for in the music sources yet? I could only presume (but haven't tried yet) that it is for playing a standard audio CD in the DVD drive.

What would be really cool is if this ties in with the MP3 playback support for Pro Nav systems (September software update?) and you could play a whole DVD-R filled with MP3's (legally acquired of course!)

You'd probably need one of those pre-processed 'hack' DVDs that allow you to reconfigure how the player is set up. I've seen many of these that can allow U.S. DVD players to play European DVDs and vice versa.
Once you put it through your player though, you can't reprogram the player's set-up without some SERIOUS intervention.

It'd be pretty tough for the software hacks to make considering how BMWs stuff is so proprietary... let alone finding one for sale.

If you look in the manual, there are voice commands to bring up the DVD Player.. so maybe the functionality is there and just needs to be unlocked?

(Page 204 for reference: Commands "DVD Player Menu" and "DVD Player")

YOu can play MP3 DVD's!!!

YOu can play MP3 Dvd's on the dvd drive and use the idrive controller to switch to that. the only problem is you have to remove the MAp disc. I wonder if you use a dual layer disc if you can fit 4.7 GB of music plus the original MAP data on one disc? Anyone know what file format ISO or UDF the DVD map disc is? I can try it if you want, i just don't want to go through too many DVD's

That's what I hate about BMW idrive. For Lexus, you're able to watch movies in Park position. When switched to drive or reverse, it has no picture, but sound.
