Fender Rolling

How much does it usually cost?

Has anyone done it?

Where could I have this done?

Thanks!

A lot of places don't want to assume the risk of cracking your paint. The risks outweigh their benefit of the small profit they make.

Long and I were talking about buying a fender rolling tool (I believe this costs under 300 bucks) and having a fender rolling meet to help recover this cost. Of course you would need a heat gun to minimize the chance of cracking the paint.

I think the risk of paint cracking is not the biggest concern, when you roll the inner fender you loose some of the rigidity of the fender panels.

$50-$75 for both sides is the norm around here. It usually takes an hour or so with two guys a roller and a heat gun.

I spoke to F1 motorsports about rolling my fenders...

They said that's an old school technique they no longer practice. They said they will shave/cute the fenders for me.

Can anyone confirm whether this is superior to rolling?

theres a big risk paint will crack. plus the edge that are cut off could start rusting. i would rather go with the roll style.

I initially spoke with DTM and I believe Ryan said he rolls but will not warranty paint chipping.

I'd rather give Ryan the business if I had a choice...gotta do more research I guess

The paint will not chip if they use a heat gun.

I've rolled a few Honda S2000 fenders, but have never seen a need to do it on a BMW. If you don't want to go with the cut approach most body shops offer today, you can order a fender roller from Eastwood and buy a heat gun.

It is tedious, and can be a bit time consuming. It might not be so bad on BMW's because the lips (especially the rears) and tabs on S2000's are obnoxious. It generally takes 30 minutes to an hour per wheel well.

Reason it is tedious:

1. Heat Guns can melt your clear coat and anything plastic or rubber - be careful.
2. The fender roller is only as good as you are (it is a manual device), so if you push it too hard you could end up with flared fenders too.
3. If you don't use a heat gun, you will crack your clear coat and probably flare your fenders, or crease them
4. Plan out where you are going to roll before starting - you can get carried away.

Interesting all the discussion on potential chipping/not chipping. I guess I'm conservative but you can fit some pretty wide tires without rolling at all. I guess I'd just forego the extra 10mm that the roll would give me and get the narrower tire. This is no risk with little downside.

Yes, Danny. The e90 came with semi-rolled fenders. I realized that when I had rubbing on my 20mm offset ASA.

But that's no fun - I prefer to do things the hard way and this method hasn't failed me yet.
