Unhappy E92 335D Broken Diff…

Hi Guys, has anyone experienced premature diff failure on 335D? I’ve had S/Chip re-map for most of the cars life, now 18months old with 30K on clock….

I’ve done several track days and the Nurburgring last year… but last week after a spirited 80 mile drive home very late at night I experienced a speed dependant tapping noise from the rear of the car, the next day I left the car at home and called out BMW Assist, the engineer jacked the car and discovered a tight spot as the rear wheels were rotated in neutral. The cars now at the Stealers and they have confirmed the diff has internal damage? a new one has been ordered from Germany and is due in Tuesday….

I must also comment on a good customer care from the BMW Assist they kept me updated throughout the callout with text messages and had the car booked in with replacement car sorted before the engineer left my house. (The replacement car is a new 318D M sport with 6 speed auto supplied by AVIS)

Sorry to hear the news. Sounds like the car has had a spirited life so far.

Is it a warranty job or will you have to cough up

I must admit the car does get some stick but I still think it should handle it... obviously I forgot to mention the track days and re-map at the Stealers just incase this compromised the warranty claim.

Sure all those extra torques have taken their toll. Simple physics at the end of the day I guess...

This has always been one of the things that worried me about remaps, who can say how the other components will wear. Granted, your car has been getting some abuse, but you can only abuse them so much before you accelerate wear. I would say a small prayer to the download gods, that they don't search for the map.

This is one of the untold advantages of the Quaife diff - it really will last a lifetime and can take a huge amount of abuse. Our engines, even the 335d, aren't even taxing the physical load capabilities of the Quaife.

Unfortunately, as the OP has found out, the OEM diff is not built to withstand 600Nm of torque going through it lap after lap around a track on the 'Ring... fortunately however BMW are going to replace under warranty, although I would strongly suggest to the OP that you do consider investing in a Quaife differential, especially given you do so any track days. Not only will it last the lifetime of the car (theoretically) but you'll be able to expoit all the intrinsic handling capabilities of the car, without losing power in corners and bogging down when the DSC system cuts in!

The Quaife diff is on the wish list and I guess I'd better move it up the list a bit rapid... as i'm planning more track time this year!

Is it the diff, or has it just spun the splines off the inboard end of the drive shaft?

I broke the diff on my E36 2 an dhalf years ago.

It was making a tapping noise for ages. At first i thought it was a exhaust clamp tapping, but turned out to be the diff.

Drove carefully and it lasted 2-3weeks before really making a racket. Then I TRIED TO pull away quickly and was left stuck where I was. 1400 quid later i was back on the road.

Think you drive on the edge and live on the edge by the sounds of it!

You could work for BMW R&D section - you'd be in your element.
