Old guy question on IPOD use

Okay, I've searched the forum and RTFM. No help.

'09 335 coupe with Logic 7 and Idrive. My IPOD is connected in the center console using the BMW Y-cable. I commute 20 minutes each way to work and make several short trips during the day.

Can I leave the IPOD hooked up and charging for short intervals like this over a long period of time...several weeks, maybe a couple of months? I almost never update it. It's a four gig IPOD, but I have the 80 best songs on earth I want already loaded. Is this going to kill the battery, and/or pose a fire hazard?

Second question. I can't figure out how to turn the actual IPOD off using the controller. I checked - when I lock the car door, the stereo shuts down, but I can still see the "safe to remove" display on the IPOD itself (armrest open). Does the IPOD power off after a certain period of inactivity?

My first car had an eight track...

you can't turn it off yourself, but it will shut down after a period of time. and yes, you can leave it plugged in for a long time.

If you only have the 80 best songs on earth that you want to play on your car stereo, I would propose that you burn a MP3 CD at a high quality and play it on the car radio, that way you should get a better sound quality and dont have to worry about leaving the iPod in the car!
