House Alarms - Anybody know whats what?
Moved into my new house last year, but recently got burgled. The bassa's nicked my 2 LCD'S Luckily, they didn't cause a mess and the insurance has paid up.
Anyway, i need to install an alarm, just a basic no thrills baby to act as a deterrent more than anything. House is a 3 bed detached. Chubb Security (who have just redone my work) have quoted me £1300 installation plus £150 per year maintenance... jees Are there wireless ones available now with PIR's? Any advice would be appreciated as I ain't got a clue

I bought a Yale one from Homebase which is fully wireless. All battery operated which you can fit yourself with wireless PIR detctors. The alarm can be linked to the phone line and you can program it to call a number if the alarm goes off. You can also buy additional PIR detectors and window detectors and add them to the system at any time.
Hope that helps Andy |

I've had a wireless job for about ten years which was a DIY job. The PIRs have a PP3 battery in them (last about 2 years) and the alarm box just plugs into a 13A socket. The box is battery-backed so if it's simply unplugged the alarm continues to function. The only cable you need is to the external bell box so it's dead easy.

When i looked into this last yr i was quoted £299 for an ADT alarm fitted and £26 a month for full monitoring on a 3yr contract
Think that was from eagle security? That was for a wired alarm inc smoke detectors etc and linked to police and fire service.

It sounds easier than i thought to fit a wireless system myself mind you. Might be worth popping down to B&Q/Homebase and getting some advice. Thanks Gents!

You do know that there is no B&Q in Lincoln.

I've got an ADT alarm however thats partly due to a discount thanks to my brother who is an engineer with them. £500 for a fully wired system, monitored and is to police standard so they will turn up if it goes off. That was cost, and a few beers on top!
I also have 2 CCTV cameras (PTZ's) which are also linked to the system and can be accessed remotely by ADT to confirm if anyone is hanging about. Maybe slightly OT, however I've haven't been robbed since!! |

I too was impressed at ow quickly the police turned up when I had a false alarm. They do seem to take it seriously.

Are we in the same country? There's a huge B&Q... The Home office are now offering a Burglary Pack (as of 7th April) for anyone looking to install an alarm. It contains vouchers for B&Q/Focus offering discounts on all 'security' products. Info available at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/crime-v...rime/burglary/ I've phoned them, and they are sending me a pack in the post. Worth a try!

That's very clever, the way the burglar has made the website look so real to collect the names and addresses of people without alarms

I've been happy with my ADT alarm but you do pay for it. Think the whole 'wireless' system was around £600-700 to install and I pay £25p/m for it to be actively monitored by ADT (including police & fire). I think they've got a fair amount of play in the initial cost so just barter with them. One advantage of wireless is that you can take it with you if you move house.
Even though you end up paying a premium I'd always lean away from DIY alarms. I know I still pay monthly for mine but included in that is a warranty so if anything is faulty they come out and replace it. Also includes an annual service where they come & test everything, change batteries, etc. I've had calls from ADT when a false alarm has been triggered (i.e. just one fault occured) but understand the police only come out if two sensors are triggered (i.e. someone walking from one room to another) or obviously if you hit the panic button. I presume the Fire Brigade come out if the sensor picks up anything other than burnt toast!!! I know a couple of people who have had DIY systems but they had nightmares with them not working correctly. They just couldn't diagnose where the problem was so never ended up setting it. Just had the box out front!!!

Nope, no B&Q in Lincoln. There is, however, two Ls, an I, two Ns, a C and one O. But no B & Q.

Try finding someone who will install a "Scantronic" alarm.
These are usually fitted to commercial premises. We have one, other than battery changes its been no probs for the past 20 years. http://www.coopersecurity.co.uk/

The choice between hard wired and wireless would normally be determined by the constuction of your house. If it is possible to run cables inside your walls and under floors then i would say go hard wired if not then go wireless. You can also have a hybrid of hardwired that can have wireless connected to it.Wireless batteries should be changed every year and should only be duracell or similar.Adt prices have certainly come down in recent years but beware the small print.Used to be around £140 plus vat for a call out for 1st half hour also you do not own the system but lease it from them
