smartphone integration and iPhone 3G

I have an 09 335d with the smartphone integration and iDrive. My CA threw in for free the snap-in adapter for iPhone 3G USB which is the correct adapter for the 2009 car and iPhone 3G, but I can't get the car to read the iPhone. I plug it in, the iPhone gives me a warning about incompatible device and asks if I want to go into airplane mode. I select no. The iDrive display says the car is reading the USB device, but then it always stops and says it's disconnected. If I manually start the music on the iphone and plug it in the cradle, the sound does come through the car's speakers, but I can't access the playlists through iDrive. I also have an iPod touch and it works fine with the USB iPod cable and if I plug the phone into the cable, I can access the music too, but of course the phone won't work then. Has anybody been able to get this working? The sound of the music through the phone adapter sounds much better than the cable and I'd rather not have to lug around both the phone and an ipod.
