Question about RFT...

Hi there,
i am looking to change the wheels for my x5 e70, and i am thinking of getting just normal tyres instead of Run flat tyres...

just wondering if i need change anything?or do i just treat it as a normal tyre?

Thanks....

you'll enjoy softer ride as tyres are softer and lighter. Just make sure you have a backup for when tyre goes bust. Can of glue, jack, pump, or spare.

You can swap out RFT for conventional tyres on your same wheels with no problem. Like its been stated before, you need to have a backup plan in case of a puncture.

As the others said, and just to add, it was like getting a whole new car. Suddenly the E90 felt and rode and sounded like an expensive car. It is much more relaxed to drive because there is now no tramlining. It was the best thing I ever did.

The other interesting thing was that changing all 4 tyres and getting BMWs M Kit with the compressor and can of goo cost less than buying 4 runflats... so from all angles it was a no-brainer to me.

I was told by the BMW dealer that their wheels are not compatible with conventional tyres. When I asked at my local tyre shop they told me that they can fit conventional tyres to BMW rims intended for run-flats. Anyway they had about a dozen sets of second hand BMW rims sitting in the window. I am interested to know if there are any potontial issues with getting rid of the run-flats. Is the BMW dealer I asked simply having a case of denial?

As mentioned on another thread BMW now have a space-saver wheel available as a retrofit for the 3-series sedan for some $$ (I'm not sure about the coupe).

Jax quickfit in Bondi Junction. Dozen might be a slight exageration.. maybe 8 - 10 sets. For sure give them a call. It is strange because they didn't display other second hand rims apart fromt the BMW ones.

Your BMW dealer is wrong ...... conventional tyres can be fitted to BMW rims intended for RFT. The only potential issue with getting rid of RFT will be not having a spare in the event of a flat. As mentioned above and on other threads, there are options available to you to mitigate the risk.

There weren't any prices indicated. I am not sure about the condition, although they seemed generally ok. They appeared to be mostly 3 series rims, including one set of E46 sport rims. I think I did see one set that I thought was from an X5, but I could be wrong about that.

+1 ive been looking for a set of M Y spoke 19 inch for our X3, got quoted $3,300 from the dealer without tyres. it might be worth exploring this option if they have a spare set lying around.
