Run Flats
I finally decided that I couldn't stand my Bridgestone run flats another mile.
Replaced with RE750s. The car is absolutely transformed! Had I known that the tires made that much difference I would have junked the run-flats the first day. The RFTs were terrible handling(tramlining and twitching) and rode like a suspensionless wagon, telegraphing every small bump and crack. I can't imagine that BMW will continue to use these tires if they're not improved. |

Same here, I had to replace 4 Runflat Bridgestone Potenzas before realizing that I should get non-runflat tires. When I finally did, it was a rebirth of my driving experience in my E90. The roads were much more smooth, and my fear of hitting potholes and speedbumps were alleviated.

I think that the run flats are just part of the equation for purchasing this car. If I wanted a completey smooth ride then I would get a Lexus.
However I am open to replacing them with non run flats if indeed the 335 rides like a jalopy. |

I don't really think it's sacrificing safety when I think about how dangerous the EL42s are in the rain...the other day it was raining and my car was basically gliding and I thought I'd go off the road, meanwhile some guy in an old Subaru was driving faster than me (and no, I wasn't driving at an inappropriate speed). That's yet another addition to my negative rain experiences.
And then everytime I hit a remotely large bump or pothole it feels like the whole car is gonna break apart, with the CD temporarily stopping and everything. I ride the same bumps in cars with regular tires (low profile tires, btw) and it's not even a problem. So to me, there isn't anything anyone can do to make me like my runflats. Big deal they won't go flat with a hole...everyone's been dealing with non-RFTs forever and I think I can deal with it some more in exchange for having safe driving characteristics in the rain and snow. Just need a spare tire kit now..

Sorry - I can get a bit pedantic at times...FYI, I have had no problems at all with the Potenzas and I have 48,000 kms on them....(sport package). If you tires are wearing unevenly causing these instability problems now is the time to check the alignment...just had mine done and it was off....

I don't plan on changing wheels with seasons...I just don't have time...so I need good all-season tires. Until recently, the EL42s have been the only all-season RFT available in 225/45/17, but now the Conti ProContact SSR offers another choice. They do not seem to have hydroplaning problems, according to some user opinions. But I think my overall initial experience has driven me away from preferring RFTs. Also there are some other factors (which I stated in other threads).

For CA driver you can run Potenza all year long no need to have a second set of tires.

I had the Contisport Contact (Continental) which were replaced at 43000Km with Bridgestones (Potenza RE050A, 225/45/17). I also believe that the RFT make the car's handling a little bit stiffer but I had no really argument ont his subject. The Continentals were awfull in rain. The Bridgestones are a lot better. So it's a matter of driving style and the feeling that each one of us has.
