Swapping from a 335d to 320d ??
Just having a think and wondering about swapping to a 320d as i dont think i can trust myself with the 335!
I do a lot of miles ... and my right foot is getting heavier by the day which is no good thing! The engine is too good ... and i keep exploiting it! Im seriously starting to consider swapping my 335d to a 320d and was wondering if anyone else had done similar (prob not!!) Other benefits will be more mpg (i drive 700+ miles a week) so financially ill be better off too and from what ive read the 320d is a blinding motor.

Not done it but you WILL notice a massive power difference! - The 320D is a great motor and remapped its even better. I'm getting nearly 49mpg now after my remap.
Wanna swap? ![]()

i know what you mean about the heavy foot, i'm just like that in my car
![]() Wish BMW made crap engines! Do bear in mind that you can still lose your license in a 320d they aint slow, but like you said your doing 700+ miles so financially it makes sense but who cares!!! Keep the beast ![]() Also you might miss the smoothness and sound of the 6 cylinder engine! ![]() |

And to make it worse the car is about to have an aero kit fitted, new wheels and the windows tinted ... its about to look rather good!
Just been checking AUC prices - wtf?? They seem to have risen massively! I cant afford a 320d!!

The 320d will sound like a bag of nails up against your 335d

you will be deeply dissapointed when you see wht it might be worth with high miles. i just went through the process and was made miserable!
43,000 miles, Oct 2007 M?Y 2008 noo nav and leather but remainder there! £16,500!! keep it and be more disciplined as the fuel consumption saving is meaningless if you punt a load of dough or losses in to the car. a move from 40 mpg to 49 mpg based on 700 miles a week will provide you with aprox £500 - 600 saving PA. thats a move form 11.5ppm to 9.5ppm on average.

I think you'd lose so much on your 335 it would be madness - would takes years to recoup the fuel savings to cover it.
Also as said above, the 320d is no slouch so you could still get into trouble. I do know where you're coiming from though - my 330d lets me go well over 100mph before I realise whats happening (officer) |

Kind of did a "similar" swap to you, p/x'd my E60 M5 to an 07 320D Tourer and hated every single minute. I had it 6 weeks before I started looking to get rid and hence ended up with the 335i.
The new ED 320D's are fine, the 163 was not inspiring, but I don't see the point for such a marginal increase in MPG from the 335D. You will regret it, then end up back in a 335D ![]() Cheers Ben |

I went the other way from a e92 320 to a e92 330D. TBH, most times the 330D is not that much quicker. Went from a manual to an auto which may also contribute.
However when get straight rd the 330 is definately quicker and sounds much better. MPG is about 8 worse on the 330. Overall not worth changing down as the 320 will hold it's value better than the 335 so expensive swap. |

Set Cruise to 70 and enjoy the 6 cylindr burlbe while watching your MPG increase ![]() PS Get the Evolve group buy as that will increase your MPG as well ![]() If you do decide to go for the 320d, you can still use it.

I've gone the other way - from 320d to 325i - and don't regret it for a second. Yes I only get 30mpg now, but that is still 400+ miles per tank and the noise just makes it all worthwhile.
Forget the power difference, every time you get in a 320d and press 'start' you'll be wishing you had that 6-cylinder growl under the bonnet, and as others have said you'll probably lose more by swapping than you'd hope to get back in fuel costs.

Personally I wouldn't do it and not knocking the 4 cylinder engines by any means but once you've had the smooth 6, nevermind the variable power, then for me it would be a no, no.
Appreciate you're trying to factor in cost etc. but can't see the cost being a viable option as others have said. What price can you put on pleasure and fun is my attitude - life's too short. |

Mate i take it your current situation has led to this idea.
If it really will make life easier then do it. You will still be in a similar car but with performance. I dont think it will be easy by any means.

I feel I am well placed to comment on this.
I had a 335d Coupe for around 9 months (long for me), and now have an 09 320d M saloon. The performance difference is of course significant, BUT I think he 320d 177 is absolutely plenty for nearly every situation in day to day driving. I've done 3400 miles since I collected March 2nd, a reasonable amount of motorway, but plenty of fun in Surrey countryside too. Quick blat on a private road (cough) the other day saw 140 come up very easily. I also raised an eyebrow or two of a biker on a twisty A road the other day - of course he was off after the corners, but holding me up into and round them, despite having his knee down. Do date the car is showing 51.3mpg which I think is astonishing. 60mpg is easy on a speed limit motorway cruise. Even the noise isnt that bad - not as nice as the 335d 6 pot, but apart from the initial cold start up - most people have thought it was petrol. Plenty of torque - and this is all on a standard car (co car so wont be mapping it). To be clear - it isnt a sports car, and isnt "FAST", but it is "surprisingly quick", and quick enough for most of the time. I never feel like I dont have enough power (possibly helped knowing there is a 190bhp/800kg's car on the drive I suppose!) Just my 2p - shout if you want to know more. |

PS - dont forget if you sell your 335d (or worse trade it) you'll lose an amount of money which may make even a major increase in fuel savings take a long tim to recoup.
I should say though, you could do your week's mileage on one tank....... |
