Live Traffic Updates on Navigation on 2007: Update for Earlier Cars ??

Has anyone found out whether 2006 and earlier BMW's can just buy the new DVD and get the Live Traffic Update feature on their Navigation Units?

I have heard rumors that THAT is all that it requires and that all newer BMW navigation systems (with iDrive) can already receive the live updates but need the DVD to use that info.

Can we find out for sure?

Thanks.

I don't think it's the DVD, it's the TMC function in the hardware. If you access the secret menu in I-Drive, you'll see that TMC is one of the option. Currently it's not a functioning option, but it might be possible with software upgrade

To work TMC (Traffic Message Channel - that's what the Traffic info system is called) needs:
1) Hardware - This is built into the Satnav Pro and Business Nav on the E90. They even have a second radio tuner that listens to the TMC data, whilst you listen to the Radio.
2) Mapping data and Unlock codes - these are on the map DVD
3) A local company compiling and transmitting the data. The the UK the service is provided by ITIS holdings and broadcast on the Classic FM signal. Its usually a subscription service, hence the need for unlock codes on the DVD.

From what I gather from other posts here, the US does not have anybody transmitting the data, at least not country wide.

So what you're saying is, if we can get a hold of the Map DVD with TMC and someone out there transmitting the data, us E90 owners can get the traffic info via i-Drive? Reason I am asking is because E92 is suppose to be TMC capable in U.S. so I am assuming the infrastructure of TMC broadcast is in place, just need the new DVD?

TMC services are apparently in place in America, have been demonstrated in China and are under development for a number of other countries. (info from http://www.tmcforum.com)

I assume Navteq would need to include the US unlock codes on the DVD inorder for the system to work with whichever TMC radio carriers are available in the States. However, that would require some licensing agreement between BMW, Navteq & the radio networks.

All the best.

Sounds good, then I wonder if the disc on the E92 will be different and if we can a hold of that disc we should be able to get TMC info. As stated on BMW site, E92 will be available with TMC information in the US

Try asking BMWNA- it all depends if Navteq have installed the unlock codes on the DVD for the appropriate TMC stations.
That will depend on the licensing issues between BMW, Navteq & the TMC radio carriers.

All the best.

I put this info up on forum a week or so ago but didn't get a comment. This news release about Navteq may be related to this discussion.

I think this topic is of very great interest to e90 owners with iDrive. Has the venerable e90Fleet weighed in on this one yet? Can anyone provide a definitive answer yet? Thanks.

I read the press release several days ago about the new updated Nav system. It mentioned that in the US around 50 cities will have traffic updates. Is there a list of the cities where this service will be offered?

Oh, I read your post, and it was indeed clear. It's not really the answer I want to hear though. I still hope we can get a software upgrade to do the trick.

However, if you could share any specific technical reasons why it is NOT possible to upgrade, that would be apprecaited, too.

As I read info from you guys, I infer.....
Software update, getting Navteq DVD with TMC unlock codes may all be possible. But most important question here is "Do US spec E90 has second radio tuner in our radio units ?"
If yes, then it seems possible to get TMC in our E90. Or may have to upate our radio units (is this possible ??)

Yes it does, if you go into the hidden Idrive menu, you'll see TMC as option

yes but that is apparently not the same as the RTTI BMW is using in the U.S. from what I have read.
