Windshield Chipped
It's actually just a pit, about the size of a "period" at the end of a sentence. Is this something I should get fixed before it starts spreading (I live in a cold climate), or do only legitimate chips spread? Any experts out there? Would appreciate some feedback.

If it were a crack I would worry about getting bigger since you live in a cold climate but since it is just a pit don't worry about it. Take it to a glass repair shop if it bothers you that much.

I've seen many debacles where the paint gets ruined because of the glass, while removing the old one. Then the installer looks at you with that dumb look and says, "I think that was already there before we started." Also, A lot of times it's never the same because the factory process and the dealer/auto glass shop process is different; causing everything from leaks to noises while you drive.
Don't get me wrong, it's not the most complicated thing. However, a chip the size of a period shouldn't warrant a change. |

The dude who started the thread has a chip the size of a period. For you though, 3 chips 1/4 the size of a penny is pretty big. If they put that filler stuff in it, it does work well at preventing the moisture from seeping in and ultimately freezing. Although it looks good from the outside of the car, it doesnt look that great on the inside. I guess I would change the windshield! Are you going to let the dealer do it? Some dealers farm the work out to local shops.

Also, do you have the rain sensing wipers? [edit: checked your user info, you have a 330i, so you do] If you do the guy at the glass shop told me they are a real btch to replace and takes them 4 hours. That being said, I can see there is a real possibility of them screwing it up. Just to make you aware of what could go wrong

I would never have the glass replaced on my car unless it were absolutly necessary. I had the glass on my last car replaced 3 times. Each time they have to scrape off the old sealant they gouge the paint and now rust has formed under the paint around the frame for the glass. This was done by Philips Glass which is a national chain. Now I would be facing going to a body shop to have it repaired and potentially ending up with overspray problems. This is the reason I ended up replacing my 7 year old, 200k mile Toyota with a new BMW. The Toyota would have lasted longer and although I took good care of the car and it ran great, I was facing a rust problem caused by having the windshield replaced. I am now afraid of ever having my windshield replaced.

I have had many rock chip pits on the windshield. None of them crack or spread. But I keep my windshield very clean (for obvious reasons). However this is what I heard: the reason why a small (less than 1/4 inches crack) spreads is because of dirty windshield. The reason I was told is that a dirty windshield has lots of dirt (i agreed). These tiny dirt particles get into the tiny crack and over the years with heat/cold/rain the small crack expands/contracts and with the tiny micro dust particle, it help the crack spreads longer. FWIW, not sure if that is true. I like to keep my windshield clean no matter what, it just help me see better and if it prevent a small crack from spreading, that is even better.

Those that have had small pits and cracks repaired, what was the outcome? Were the pits totally gone or were they still very noticeable? Thanks.

from the outside it looks good,
but on the inside its annoying. anything with previous black looking crack lines turn clear, but you can still see the crack if the sun shining on it. Anything that shimmers in the light just becomes like there is a spider web on the windshield. fk |
