Cant put car into 4th gear

4th gear is notchy and makes a grinding noise when i shift into 4th.

With the car turned off I can't even throw the shift lever into 4th gear at all.

WHAT DID I DO??

if it was my fault then a warranty repair is out of the question right? How much am I looking at for a transmission problem like this?

found what a synchro does. . . ..

A transmission synchronizer (fig. 4-17) has two functions, which are as follows:
1. Lock the main shaft gear to the main shaft.
2. Prevent the gear from clashing or grinding during shifting.

coverred under warranty?

Yup, definatly a syncro. But only one of them is messed up so I'm guessing it's not your fault. ZF is usually pretty good at making tank gearboxes but I guess no one's perfect. Have them check the clutch to make sure it's not dragging. That will also destroy your syncros. But again, if this were the case, all the gears would be bad.

Don't worry. If the car is under warranty you're good to go. They won't blame it on you. Def sounds like the syncro is blown, should be an easy fix.

Cause: Faulty trans

Correction: Replaced faulty trans, bled clutch and test drove, vehicle is now OK.

Wait, they gave you a WHOLE new transmission? For what was more than likely a blown syncro? Either that thing was clearly defective from the factory or you did a number on it.

Glad you got it fixed without any aggravation.

I'm gonna go with defective from factory, since I don't race the car or push it that hard at all.

This tranny problem will probably make me lean towards extending the 50,000 mile warranty.

I'm currently at 35k after 2 years.

For what it's worth my guess is these problems are very rare. You probably had a defective unit from the factory, these things happen as no production process is perfect, and that is exactly what the new car warranty is for. To fix defective parts from the factory on the rare occasion they occur. Consider your car very unlucky to have had the problem once, it was fixed, butI seriously doubt it will happen again. This was just a fluke...
