cdns: import e92 m3 ?

Do any of you canadians think that importing a future e92 m3 from the US would just cost same as an well-equipped 2007 e92 335i coupe in canada?

Are the savings importing the vehicle like an m3 substantial enough that this is worth the time?

are we gonna ask the same question for every model of the new 3er? let's see, people have already asked about importing E90's from US to Canada, let's ask about importing the upcoming M3 to see if the answer will be any different.

Hey relax. Just because a question has been posted before doesn't mean it's easily search-able. Search function is encouraged, but that doesn't mean we must give a sarcastic response to posts that asks a repeat question.

besides what Pangearox said (which were valid points), you'll need to drive to US for the service and warranty repairs. Oh yeah, one big thing, you need to find an American dealership willing to sell it to you, + the applicable state taxes you have to pay.

Personally, I think if you're nickel and diming just to get a M3, you should buy it

Jason, don't mean to come across as a dick, though it may seem like it but all I'm saying is importing new cars are less viable than importing used ones, you can save more money importing used cars

actually, i think the savings may be worth it for some people. recently the toronto star ran an article about the current inconguencies regarding new vehicle pricing between US and canadian cars (when similarly equipped). The largest differences in price were in the higher end vehicles (ie BMW) if I am not mistaken. In addition, the article alluded to the fact that it is not expensive or difficult to 'modify' US vehicles to conform to Transport Canada regulations. I couldn't find the star article, I wish I had kept it.

here is an interesting link:

Well, you pay PST and GST, you pay 6.1% duty, ~$100 excise fee, whatever it costs to modify the car, then you're done. So about 20%+$700. On an 80k USD car (90k CAD) you'll pay about 15k CAD in taxes and fees all said and done. The Canadian price will probably be around 105k, when you add tax you'll save between 15-20k ROUGHLY, obviously it'll depend on pricing, but you get the idea. You lose your 4 years free maintenance.

A friend of mine just imported an SC430, because Lexus is retardedly lame and imports the car at a rate of 1.5 (that's right, its 66k USD and 94k CAD), he saved over $28,000 CAD.

So if it's worth it or not depends on the car, the msrp difference, and what your time is worth.

Well on our BMW (2002 330xi) the free maintenance has saved us about $2,500; so assuming you save 10k off the bat you can deduct ~$2,500-$3,000 for the lost of maintenance. Just all little things you need to keep in mind. Your re-sale will also likely take a hit (people are wigged out about buying a "US" car in Canada, for whatever reason), and you'll also have to worry about BMW killing warranties on imported vehicles (Porsche and Ferrari just did it).

I wish people would search before posting.........you WILL save money importing a car from the U.S., but the amount will vary from car to car (obviously).

My brother has imported his last 3 cars from the U.S. and he saved big time on all of them. He just bought an M3 (cab w/hardtop) 3 weeks ago from NJ....saved 26K AFTER importing it. I'm currently looking for an S550 for my dad.......he'll save about 30K after all is said and done.

BTW, there's nothing to modify on a BMW.

Something to think about.....

Are you kidding? The Canadian "free maintenance" basically comes down to a few free oil changes. Now, losing the warranty completely that might be a deal breaker... but otherwise the savings could be well worth it.

I've heard of many people doing this on late model used cars, my understanding is that you probably save on the US sales tax which can be a pricey factor to put into the equation.

Is it really that much? My understanding is that I'm going to get 3 oil changes out of the free maintenance. Much of the stuff the US covers, BMW Canada doesn't.

I have a few friends who got their cars from the states.
BTW I'm in BC.
Although none of my friends has brought BMW's, I'll share their stories.
First of all, you pay tax. It's roughly 20% (as already mentioned above).
The tax we pay for expensive cars in BC is 16%.
6% GST, 7% PST, additional 1% (up to 3%) for the cars above $4699 (+1% for $4700+, +2% for $4800+, +3% for $4900+).
I am not sure about the excise tax but it won't be much.

The savings?
I belive the state of Oregon doesn't have taxes.
If the same car was to be purchased in BC, Canada, one would have to pay around $5000 (cdn) more (based on MSRP, including all the taxes mentioned above).
I have calculated this with a Lexus IS250 as I was considering buying it (I never did though).
These "imported" cars need not to have speedo meters converted to Kph if the owner can live with it. Most of the cars have both mph and kph on the speedo anyways.
Also, the warranty and services are not problems at all.
Warranty is still enforceable since most car companies treat North American cars the same.
And, many (and most) dealers do services for the cars from states at the same price.
If there is any "free" services offered from Canada, they will provide it to the cars from the states (like a recall or something).
If these free services are offered from the dealer, then you would lose it.
I don't know about the BMW policy but my friends have brought a Subaru WRX and Nissan 350z.
As I said before, I don't know about BMW.
But cars in Canada is surely overpriced and you will save a lot if BMW works in the same way.

Speedo has both mph and kmph

How about bumpers?
US-4kmph
Canada-5kmph.

Do we need to replace them?

Well let me see:
1. You will have to do all the upgrades, and modification- that cost money for sure.
2. I am not so sure but I think you will have to pay import tariffs for any vehicle that is not manufactured in North America- I heard it's like 33% on anything over the first CDN$10K, I am not sure of the actual %. The tariff is not on the NBV but the GBV, so you can't get breaks through depreciation.
3. Then there is the inspection that will have to be done on the vehicle.
