Our transmission is so slow!

I was looking at the time it take the auto to change gears at 100 it took for ever. Is there a way to make it shift faster? I was letting the car shift in ds. If you shift by yourself is it quicker. Have any companys created software or a shift kit for it?

...you think the auto is slow, try the 2-3 shift on the manual!

the zf 6 speed in the 335 is definitely one of the better gearboxes i've driven. its no DSG/DCT but for a traditional automatic its really never let me down.

and i used to be one of those "i'll never own an automatic" kind of guys.

fwiw, it's not actually the transmission that is slow but rather the ECU closing the throttle plate and waiting for the torque to decrease before shifting. If you have a Bavariant Technic cable you can clearly see the preamble to each shift, the ECU is protecting the transmission.

You may notice that you get a much faster and harder shift if you are manually shifting with only about 20% throttle around 3000ish rpm....that's probably below the threshold where the ECU intervenes before permitting the shift to take place.

The transmission shifts pretty damn fast. Look at an acceleration graph on a Gtech, etc. I compared it to my SMG 06 M3 at full slam you in the back race shifts. The 335i lost nothing on the SMG. In fact, during the shifts, the steptronic actually gained ground on the SMG.

Look at this video showing the steptronic running against the instantaneously shifting M3 DCT. This is a modded M3 that surely runs in the 11's. If there were any significant lag in shifting, believe me, you would see it in this run:

Here you can watch the tach, and see how quickly the steptronic shifts:

I had this perception a while back (before tune) and this is the solution:

You need to reset the ECU and adapt to a new driving style with shift points that you are comfortable with....So, after you disconnect and reconnect the battery, drive in manual mode for a while...shifting when and where you like.

I would drive in manual mode for a few days or so to let it fully adapt.

I would start there, though I can't promise that this is the definitive solution.

Good luck
