Dyno result for my 335d LCI

Hi guys,

Just came back from doing a dyno run and must say that I'm more than surprised (in the bad way) with the results.

There were 2 runs performed in the 5th gear and 1 in the 6th gear. The maximum power obtained was 271,8hp @3943rpm and highest torque was 543Nm @2612rpms both in 6th gear.

A friend of mine with a '07 335d e92 with no Efficient dynamics obtained almost identical figures with the ones that BMW quotes.

I really don't understand why such a big difference between 2 cars with the same engine and why mine is so far from the BMW specs.

This is always the danger with rolling roads mate, if your happy with the way the car goes and its quick enough then dont worry about the numbers.

If you took it to another rolling road on another day you might well get totally different numbers.

Also, as you may remember we talked about the Superchips map that was low to start with - perhaps there is a geographical reason why yours and the superchips car (if it was a local one) have lower power....

Dont let it bother you.

Yep, you're right, i will not let it bother me.
What I don't understand is why my friend's e92 335d obtained higher values. maybe there's something wrong with my car

I dont think any of the pre LCI 6 Cylinder cars had Efficient Dynamics - I could be wrong.

I wonder if there is some difference pre-and-post facelift then, regardless of what BMW say the world is moving towards lighter emissions etc so its possible?

yeah...they put a denser DPF for low emissions which reduces power

Thats ghey.

Surely then the first mod for you mate should be to find out if the original DPF fits and if so, source one!!

For once, it might be better having the older car!

Also, when I bought my car (June 2007) the quoted 0-62 was 6.1secs wheras now the 335d E92 is quoted as 5.9 secs.

Surely then this does not add up. It would lead you to believe the ED/LCI model has slightly more hidden horsepower ?????

I might suggest thats its because 6.1 was mildly conservative.

Also, BMW are notorious for lying outright about all these kinds of things...

The 328i Sport was significantly quicker than expected, and when it changed from LSD to TCS they never changed the 0-60 even though it was obviously going to be different.

The M3 Evo (E36) was quoted at 321bhp but in truth they were usually lucky to make 305...

1. Unless you compare on the same dyno / same day / same fuel / same operator you can never be sure of comparing figures.

2. Autoboxes are problematic for calculating losses on overrun. If the dyno graphs showed WHEEL power figures instead of calculated FLYWHEEL power figures then any errors in the transmission loss calculations would not matter. After all it is WHEEL power that moves the car so really thats the most relevant figure for comparison.

ALWAYS ASK FOR BOTH WHEEL AND FLYWHEEL POWER FIGURES from a dyno run!!! Then you have both for comparison and you can see what the DYNO machine is using for loss figures. You've paid for the test, make sure you get all the figures.

both cars were ran one after another by the same guy on the same dyno; both had calculated flywheel power, we both had 18' wheels, i had summer tires and he had winter ones, still...his numbers were higher. Anyway, maybe older 335 are more powerful...

Andrei, how does the two 335's performance compare on the road? Try rolling start tests, LOTS of them and swap cars with each other too to elimiate driver error etc..

Does his car have the edge? it may well have slightly more HP.

How many miles now ?

it has 17k km;

the cars perform quite similar, the coupe is lighter so sometimes it performs a little better than mine but it depends on the launches too

I'll try another dyno anyway....

Only try another dyno if your friend also co0mes with you, otherwise its all a bit academic.

Carl the e92 is 10kg lighter than the e90. When we race we are very close but although is hard to admit he usually gets an edge....
I guess this whole thing is a nonesense. As Imran said there can be up to 15-20hp difference between same engines. It's just i didn't expect my lci with efficient dynamics to have a lower output....

Bear in mind diesel engines get better with age/use - your engine may be tighter than his if yours is newer.

My old Fabia vRS got noticeably quicker after 15k miles was on the clock
