goto a local auto parts store and get a tread depth gauge. Most tires will hasve wear bars that sit about 2/10" off the tire's tread grooves. That is the DOT legal limit for tire wear. Any less than 2/10" is illegal but you can run tire below that mark safely. JUST NOT IN THE WET.
