If you're under warranty, then take it to the dealer. If you're not, take it to the dealer and bring money. There's no real way to tell without knowing the fault codes.

Tow it to a local shop who can read the OBDI. Don't take it to the dealer unless you plan on spending a lot of money. If you have a buddy that has a shop and the reader have him come over with the tool and read the codes.
Your best bet is to tow it to a local shop that you know can read codes and have them diagnose. |

I got this from a this site, http://www.consumeraffairs.com/autom...bmw_trans.html.
"I own a BMW 323CI and have kept it in phenomenal condition for 9 years,i have brought the car for every scheduled maintance and for a 9 year old car it only has 39,400 miles. Yesterday i went to back out of a parking space in reverse and the car would not engage. It will go forward in drive but not reverse. I took the car to the same dealership where i purchased and had all scheduled maintenances and John in customer service called me to notify me that the car needed a new transmission and that the cost would be about $6,400" I don't know how true that can be. |

Unfortunately that's how BMW fixes transmissions, they replace it. If I were you, go find a reputable mechanic who specializes on BMW trans, or try to find a used one via eBay or wrecking yard. Let us know what you decided to do. |

Yup. Your best bet is to find one at the junkyard and take it to someone who knows what they're doing to swap it out. It won't be hard finding a shop that can do it, finding the transmission may be another mission.

only thing about that is i live in rednecky ky. guys around here don't know how to spell bmw much less work on one. closest bmw dealership is 150 miles away. that's why i was asking for help diagnosing the problem.. of course taking it to the dealer would proably be the best.
