E90 318D Towing

I thought i would share some of my experience of towing with my 318D over this last weekend.

I previously owned a Discovery 2 and had used that to tow my Bowler Tomcat to events but having got rid of it and only needing to tow an Avenger Tiger or Sunbeam Lotus i thought i would give the 318D a go.........

I had a Brink removable swan neck fitted with dedicated electrics which cost £415 fitted.

I went to Croix Le Ternois at the weekend towing a 14ft Brian James with the Tiger on board. Not sure of the weight but about 1500Kilos max. The BMW towed very well but these are the points i noticed:
  • Enough power/torque to tow at 50 -60 mph
  • drops off on hills easily meaning a fair few gear changes which i suspect a 320D would not need
  • Cruise made towing very nice on motorways
  • I managed 34mpg - Disco never did that ever let alone towing....
  • The car is not low geared enough to pull away on any incline with slipping the clutch a bit too much!

Other than those observations the car worked as well as it does when hairing around normally! To be honest i was surpised at how well it did cope with the 500 mile trip.

Cheers

Nev

Nev, any chance you could post a few pics of the towbar fitted and removed? I would be quite interested to see how the Brink one looks compared to the BMW retractable one that cost a minor fortune retrofitted?
