Can only imagine how much fuel they would use, when I struggle to get 25mpg out of the 35d version.

Competition for the Cayenne Turbo and RRS V8?

They wouldn't make it if they thought they wouldn't sell em.

Eastern Europe and China, big gas guzzling 4x4 means big status in these new business worlds...

No i have not, and i do know they handle fantastic for a big lump, but still...... Its a big old lump which WILL not drive like its 5 series cousin when it gets that engine.

Exactly - and the general quality of their roads (or lack of it) makes an X5/6 etc a much better proposition than a similarly powered sports car.

This is exactly the problem. An M car is supposed to be 'function over form', it's supposed to be designed from the ground up so that handling is optimal.

I'm sure an X5M will handle incredibly well. But it would handle far better if it wasn't a 2 tonne 4x4. It's a marketing driven compromise ... it's 'form over function' and that's entirely wrong for an M car.

I assumed that BMW were not doing a new Z4M because they were stopping production of the S54 engine and slotting the V8 was technically too demanding.

Death of BMW ///M

Now we have 5300 pound trucks with asmatic redline performance is the new BMW and ///M. No 5300 pound truck is sporty and weight cannot be overcompensated by power but despite this known rule of performance, BMW has chosen to use the great ///M engineers on stupid trucks.

BMW and ///M have chose the path of Audi and AMG. Powerful and Heavy. Powerful good but Heavy necessarily means poor handling.

Look at the torque curve of the new engine. Flat torque curve great. But the stupid thing has a 6800 rpm redline and has an asmtha attack at 5700 rpm. Everything that we loved about BMW ///M engines is lost.

Don't believe the marketing hype. Weighs too much to handle well, fuel economy is horrible and the performance is mediocre. It satisfies no one.

I don't hold a lot of hope for the F10 M5 or the F12 M6. My current M6 is probably the last BMW that I will buy for awhile. If the 5 series PAV didn't reinforce that BMW has lost its way, the X5M and X6M demonstrates that BMW has completely lost its way in my opinion.

BMW has chosen to chase new markets and is going to forget its faithful.

Absolutely,

And the 335i was the thin end of the wedge.

First of all, let's make clear that I do NOT like SUV's. Imo a car should lowered, and not higher.....

BUT, since 4 months, we have a new company car. My brother said he would like to try a SUV and traded in his '07 530d Touring M-Sport (great car, btw) for a X6 35d (with Dynamic Drive, AFS, HU and all the other goodies). I drive it quite often (as it is the company car), and I have to admit it drives great.
It doesn't feel like a traditional SUV! SUre it's heavy, but the engine's strong enough (it feels as fast as my 330d Touring).

I'm pretty sure that the X6M drives like a real M-series (although not so hardcore as an M3). I can understand BMW. M-B is quite succesfull with his AMG series. People prefre a mix in sportiness and comfort (not me, of course, I would go for 'hardcore'!).
