I hate runflats so much....

Well, currently, I'm running 3 dunlop tires and only one oem runflat. The first runflat was shot after a nail punctured it. The dealer said not to patch and that i need to get a new tire. Just recently, i looked at my passenger side tires only to find a huge blister on the front and rear sidewall.

I've had 18 in rims with very low profile tires and have never had such problems even after hitting pot holes. The worst thing is that 99% of all tire stores dont' even stock the oem runflats.....

sorry for the rant.

get rid of them...

I have had a few setups with and without RF tires, and I have disliked all of the RF setups...

My history:

- 161's with OEM RF's - disliked the RF's and wanted 162's, so I got them... sold the 161's

- 162's with Pirelli non-RF's - great improvement, but was wary about not having RF's on with no spare....

(current) 162's with OEM RF's - ride is harsher, louder, more annoying, and cost way too much to replace.

- Next set of tires on 162's - Either Goodyear Eagle F1's or BF Goodrich KDW 2's ( I will have an extra wheel available from my winter wheel setup in case of a flat)

hate to bust up this party, but depend on where the puncture was. If the puncture was in the middle of the tread section, then your dealer just took you for a ride my friend. They take that tire and fixed it and sale it for cheap and still get some money out of it while you fork out mucho dinero for a new tire. You should come here and post any questions you have before taking stealership word...

Not only that... you should not be mixing RF and non-RF tires on a car...

yeah, anyone in the TX land with a 330 tire with a puncture, i will take them off your hand for free, you don't need to pay $2 disposal fee. I betcha I can fix it and use it if the tread is still good and puncture is in the middle section of tire.

RFT tires are not to be patched, under any circumstances. normal tires can be patched in the middle, ONCE.

I will NEVER recommend patching a tire, ever. It's just a weak link in the chain. replace the tire.

Well it isn't a bad thing. All those threads convinced me to get rid of the RFT's before I even tried them. I'll let the dealer keep them, and I think I'll order my E92 with GoodYear F1's

Did you actually worry for the last 30 years that you've been driving? (or however long you've been together?)

My RFTs are going back to Bridgestone next Tuesday, with a 50% warranty claim. I have ordered Goodyear F1 DS-G3s to replace them...non-runflat.

I'll carry a winter tire (same size) in the trunk for long trips.

20K miles on my 325i and no problem with my runflats. But I know I wouldnt get them ever again. Too thick of sidewalls. But they are great for long trips.

sorry for the rant.
I really like my RFT's and no these tires aren't more delicate than regular tires.

The one thing you need to understand is the engineering of the tire.

How they're made and how they react to the laws of physics.

Once you do that, then you'll drive differently. You'll notice the difference and will not treat them like any ol tire.

The low profile tire is not just for looks it for performance too.

Same goes for the size of the rim you're sportin'.

The larger the rim, the more care that needs to be taken with the low profile tire.

Slow way down on bumpy roads, speed bumps and potholes.

They have RTF's here in Portland, Oregon... Kuni BMW. Good luck...

It's been 21 wonderful years.

I always worry when my wife is driving, but I don't have to worry about her getting a flat and not making it home.

One less thing to worry about.

RFTs appear to handle blowouts better too.

They're just safer tires, PERIOD.

21 years, that's great! I wish you many more! (We're at 10 next week!)

My wife was in my E90 a few months ago and she hit a pothole at slow speed...she called me on the cell..."I'm sure I've broken your car!!" I laughed and said, "No honey, that's the runflat tires working in concert with the new multilink suspension designed for runflat tires bottoming out and MAKING you think you've ruined something!" And those are 16" stock wheels/tires.

Frost heaves and potholes litter our Quebec roads, I think the Mafia gets all the Road Construction money!

My wife's regular car is her X5 with 255/55R18 tires....darn thing floats over all the bumps and yet corners like a sports car. I'm hoping to get a bit more of that out of my 325xi with the new tires.

I have the Bridgestones (17") and they are horrible over poor surfaces, ridges and manhole covers. They are totally unsuitable for Irish country roads. The E90 is a wonderful car in many ways and I love the RFT concept but BMW need to improve them.

Do any of the RFTs improve ride quality over poor surfaces. A few people on this forum mentioned that the Michelin PS2 Run-Flats available in Europe are quite good and that the Bridgestone and Pirelli run-flats are terrible.

Does anyone else have experience of the PS2 run-flats?

I second that. If you drive over any imperfection in the road, it really feels like the front end is going to come apart....

then it would be the new suspension that is built for RFT that you should be complaining about. With this suspension, if you replace the RFT with the conventional tires, it would do the same would it not? For crying out loud, could someone who have ditched their RFT with conventional tire run over a pot hole and tell us if it feel like the front end is going to come apart.

The experiences that I have read here (hunter 399, bmwexecutive, et al), lead me to believe that a smoother ride and better pothole compliance are achieved upon the ditching of said runflats and the adoption of coventional (proven) tires.
