Bubbling BMW Bonnet badge and wheel caps.
Has anyone noticed thier BMW badge on the bonnet and wheel caps bubbling? I was just about to order some from the dealer to replace them, but think I'll see if they can be replaced as a warranty item first, surely these things shouldn't be bubbling so soon, my car was registered Jan 08.

bonnet one has prob started due to a stone chip damaging the laquer. the stealer shouldn't have to do this, but i agree on the wheel ones. mine have gone too, and have done previously on all other BMW's i have owned!

its a fault with all the wheel caps as they have a plastic outside rim, all new E9x's have a crome rim on the outside and they look much better, so i went in and got some i think it cost £13 for the set, easy to fix to

BMW have changed the design of the wheel badges. Are your badges the type with a plastic surround and the badge as an inset ? (old type) New ones are around £4 at dealers and have a chrome edge. I agree the bonnet badge could have started off as a stone chip. I tend to make sure the badges are waxed at the same time as the car. It is always worth trying to get the dealers to replace FOC even as a good will gesture.

I thought the bonnet badges were chromed plastic so it shouldn't be corroding? - I swapped the ones on my M3 to the black/carbon style and was a little disappointed to find that the ones I purchased were plastic ones, but when I removed the original ones from the car, found them to be plastic also!
Another 2009 cost cutting exercise from BMW?? I would just pay a visit to the dealer and show them the badges and ask if they are willing to replace them under warranty - I am sure if they can they will, they will make a labour charge out of it. Last edited by M3-FAST; 06-09-2009 at 04:40 PM.. |

My wheelcentres are bubbling on the edges - I'm going to replace mine at some point. Spoils the wheels!

The wheels are just plastic caps. That's easy and the roundels on the rest of the car are easy with a DIY. You can get the carbon fibre that everyone seems to like. I had red carbon fibre but I changed them back to regular cos I just liked it better.

My bonnet badge had a bubble in it the day I picked up the car. Dealer replaced it directly.

Replaced mine with new type, much better with the chrome edge. Had a number of BM's and all have corroded after approx 12-18 months of use.

Due to a stone chipped bonnet badge I ordered a new one last week from an ebay seller. Disappointed to find it also feels very plasticy. Even though there is a BMW part number written on the back I thought it was just a replica job. Sounds like it is a genuine part then. |

Severe winters don't help, always suffered a relatively short life up here. Agree by 18-months (or two winters) and the bubbles are starting to appear.

I've had this too, on the rear badge!! and 'high-gloss shadowline trim' around the windows, both sides!! took the car to nearest stealers (Lincoln) and they are replacing it all FOC under warranty this friday, aswell they bloody should! outragous on these expensive 'well built' cars! they were very apolagetic though...

I find not using the £8 car wash places at the side of the road has a big effect on the longevity of these badges. They use seriously aggressive products to strip road grime (rumours of some using brick acid) and these products attack wheel centres and alloys.
I have had new wheel caps on my car for 2.5yrs through winter with no issues but I only use mild wheel cleaner, albeit regularly. +1 for the Chrome surrounds - look so much better. |

I stopped using acid on my wheels as I was pretty sure it was that getting inside the badge and eating away at it.
I've had two sets replaced under warranty, and until reading this post presumed someone had tried to prise off the rear badge, but I'm guessing that is starting to corrode now... |
