First time DSLR Pics C&C
This past weekend I picked up a Nikon D5000 I've taken about 700 snaps over the past few days. Just trying to get a feel for the different settings.
Here are some of my better shots. Now only if I could remember the settings I used to take these. :banghead: 1) ![]() 2) ![]() 3) ![]() 4) ![]() 5) ![]() |

Not bad! Keep shooting, and I suggest keeping a small notepad with your camera.
Also, a lot of setting information will be embedded in the picture. Just picking one of your pictures (the bird) and plugging the URL into an EXIF viewer, I got the following data: EXIF Data That should help you with some of the settings you used.

To get photo/camera settings.
When Playing the pic on the lcd, press up on the round button and you should see the photo settings as well as the exposure areas, color histogram, etc. Hope this helps,

there are few improvements that can be done to improve shot #2. I see a lot of potential in this picture if it's done correctly.
1. your focus is somewhat off, try to focus on the tip of the smoking pipe. focusing on the middle of the pipe but leaving the tip OOF just doesn't make for a powerful image. My eye gets distracted by first jumping on to the focused point, then leave for no where to exit the picture. use the tip as the lead in point, and use the bokeh as a lead out to smoothly transition the attention. 2. use a wider aperture by stopping it down to f/4 or f/5.6. the DOF is way too shallow hence not providing enough area for the focus field to include both the tip, the pipe and perhaps the bottle itself. try two shot: a) with bokeh blurring the bottle b) with bokeh blurring the background but keep bottle also in focus. 3. put the tip of the pipe to the focal point by using the rule of third. there is also a bit too much negative space on top in your composition. crop the top out a little bit.
