Massive oil leakage. E90 320i. Need help
Hey guys,
I've got a E90 320i, Mar 2006 build. My mechanic noticted oil leaks and he said that there was too much oil too know where it was coming from as it dripped all onto the tray, and there is A LOT. And my car only has 30,000KMS on it. Now my problem is that warranty is out. I spoke to Trivett BMW in Parramatta, they told me they'd ONLY be willing to put through a goodwill if it was serviced only at BMW. The service guy i was speaking to wasn't very nice either. So i decided to call up BMW Australia in Melbourne and spoke to them there. And told the nice lady the situation and was told that i should bring it in and get them to check it out and if it was found to be a manufacturing problem then the service manager should put a goodwill form into head office. I'm getting 2 different answers so i'm pretty confused. It really turns me off from ever buying another BMW. Unbelievable. I'm really unsure on how i should approach this. Do you guys think this is something i can push through? Any one else having oil leak issues? Any light on this would be appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this guys. EDIT: My car is has been properly serviced outside BMW. Last edited by Bliss; 06-15-2009 at 03:36 AM.. |

One guy in Brisbane had his 325 engine replaced recently as it was using too much oil.
Yours sounds like it may be a gasket somewhere or perhaps a porous block. I'd take it to BMW Sydney, they have a good team of techs there and as they are company owned less likely to be difficult in terms of goodwill repairs. Good luck. edit - if you have had service work done outside of BMW take all the paperwork so they can see it was done properly. Assuming genuine parts & proper schedules have been maintained there is no reason they can void a warranty repair. Quote:

Hi, 700km's on the New engine and its blowing blue smoke again I'm starting to pull my hair out, I'm hoping its still oil from the old motor sitting in the Cat in which case I'm ticked they didn't replace the Cat as well. But im keeping an Eye on it and If it needs to go in again then it will.
As for your problem, Tell your mechanic to checkout the oil filter housing gasket. My E46 Dumped about half a liter of oil in the garage one afternoon after I got home, Washed the car and had a shower when I left I saw the puddle. I felt a little ill to the stomach but its a fairly common problem on the E46's and BMW don't often learn from their mistakes so have him check it out. It shouldn't be expensive at all to replace, I did mine myself, Just had to drop the Power Steering, Alternator and pull the airbox out. Good luck mate and fight the dealership!

Ok ... we need a level head here as there is no need to panic.
Firstly, you need to take it into a BMW dealership so they can establish the problem. It might turn out to be something really simple. Secondly, before you blame BMW for not trying to repair under warrenty you also need to see it from their perspective. You stated your were out of warrenty so anything they do for you for free will be goodwill. If they don't cover under warrenty, I still dont understand why this would turn you off BMW. A warrenty has a set period applied to it which they have honored. I don't understand why you would expect warrenty cover when it expired 3 months ago. Using that argument, would you expect your insurance company to cover you if your policy expired 3 months ago. Take it one step at a time. It most likely will be something small and also most likely BMW will repair as a sign of goodwill. |

If the problem turns out to be longstanding, there's also the possibility that your current service centre may have been negligent in not picking it up in a timely manner.
If this proves the case, or you suspect the same, then you should also consider an independent inspection (eg. NRMA) as well as getting BMW to look at it. Good luck and I hope it's resolved without too many hassles. |

I'm not trying to blame BMW at all. I totally understand if they don't fix it since i don't have warranty. Nothing harsh towards them for that. The thing that puts me off is the oil leak itself. Not something you would expect from a $65,000 car. And especially at only 30,000kms. Hopefully i've cleared that up. And thanks guys for the comments so far. I think i'll book her in ASAP. And fingers crossed it's a small issue. |

Hey guys,
Need help again. It's a saturday so can't call the service centre to get these answers. So i was just reading the other thread in regards to warranty (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264125). I bought this car in Feb 2007, car build was Mar 2006 and was a demo car and was first registered to the dealer in July 2006. Therefore does that mean i get 3 years warranty? So my warranty would expire July 2009? Because when i called them up they said my car was only 2 years warranty and that it expired last year. Is there any reason my warranty is cut because it's a demo? Sorry guys, not really a genius on how warranty and such works. Thanks. |

Not 100% sure, but I thought demos get the new car warranty, in which case you may still be covered until July 2009. Readers who have bought demos may be able to confirm.
Before 2006, standard warranty was 2 years. 3 year Warranty was introduced on 1 March 2006. Therefore it's possible that when registered, the car was recorded incorrectly as 2 years (instead of 3), which is what happened to member who posted the other thread. |

Warrenty starts from the time the car is first registered. If the car was manufactured Mar 2006 and registered in July 2006 then I'm pretty sure you have 3 years warranty and you are covered till July 2009. The dealer will sort this out quickly.

Hey guys!
Good news!! It's been fixed under warranty! BMW stuffed up and i have 3 years warranty but only by a whisker, ends on 1/7/09! So everything was fixed under warranty! But i think i've been robbed of an extra year warranty, because i've called up last year for small warranty issues and was told that it was out. So for this past year i thought i had no warranty, but i actually do. And if i didnt actually tell them and saw the thread about the 3 year warranty i would of been stuffed! I'm thinking about writing a complaint to BMW Australia, to make sure they cross check all date of registration for vehicles and make sure they have the correct warranty details, because i'm pretty sure a lot of other people are getting screwed. I also hope they can extend my warranty for the stress and frustration they have caused and making me look like a fool. Okay enough ranting! So heres the damage which is pretty upsetting. I was told the car had 7 leaks! Yup SEVEN! List below shows what has been replaced: - Vac pump - Flange - Gasket - Sump Gasket - Pipe Clamp 11 hours of labour. Quite disappointing with so many leaks, but i'm glad its fixed! Thanks guys for all your input! Appreciate it! |

I got the 320d, had oil leak too. Production jan 2007. They replaced the oil gasket, took them only 2 hours (strange).
After the repair they failed to install the engine cover correctly. The engine rattle like nuts. Had to live with that for another 3 months before I had a chance to take it back. This is most likely not the same case like yours, but it shows that after major repair other issues occur. Ed |
