The inevitable...

I went to get a haircut today and parked in a municipal parking lot. The parking lot had a lot of empty spots, so I chose a spot with no cars next to me. After I got my haircut I went back to my car to put something in the trunk. As I'm walking towards my car I see this beat up van park right next to me. Of course I check to see if I got dinged. I did. I got a door ding on the front passenger side door right behind the front tire.

I really wanted to kick the van's doors in, let the air out of the tires, or anything to get back at the owner of the van. I was so pi$$ed. I just couldn't bring myself to the owner's level. I just got in my car and drove off.

Out of all the spots that was available, the van just had to park right next to me. Parked really close to me.

Does anyone have any door dings? How did you deal with it?

I was sitting in a parking lot talking on the phone the other day and just watched how most people get in and out of thier cars. Basically, they pull into a spot. If they are too close to one car, they don't even bother to reposition thier car. Then after shutting off the engine, the way they open thier doors is just unbelievable. They just push the thing open, not even holding onto the handle. If there is a car next to them, thier door just SLAMS into the other car's door. If the other spot is empty, their door flies completely open to the point that the the door strains against the hinges!

People are so careless it's disgusting.

Not "careless".... it's not respecting other people's property. I don't understand this either.... in college I drove a piece of sh** for a car but I never dinged the car parked next to me. I'd look and admire it but not damage it..... people these days.....

i think the issue is not careless but ' could not care less'. yup, no respect for other people's property is also a factor.

i've got a ding on the passenger side rear wheel well. I try really hard to be careful when I open my door, but i know we are few and far between. ANd it has nothing to do with owning a bmw. Like Safetywork I had a POS honda accord in college, and i would take care to not slam my door into toher people's cars.

That sucks - I try to avoid parking next to other cars as well, but you can't always do it.

You can usually tell who will do this - I normally avoid parking next to people carriers (minivans) because they are usually full of careless kids who will ding your car. Also knackered old cars with lots of marks on the doors - that means they have form.

That's some funny shit. The person you described is a man "living in a van, down by the river"...-Matt Foley, (Chris Farley) Motivational Speaker

Take the ding out, my friend...the person who did that is definitely a disappointed bastard/bitch cause their unhappy "living in a van, down by the river!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yeah, usually it's the guys with crappy cars banging up other parked cars..
Those with nice rides are careful not to hit anything.

Also kids tend to swing the door wide open when they get out. Just one of those things you can't really avoid. Guess that was one good thing about the ugly black plastic door strip on the old 3 series sedan.

This is why whenever I go into a resteruant to eat, I always park where I can see my car from where I'm sitting. In fact, I've waited out in the parking lot before for about 10 minutes for someone to leave so I can park in a spot where I know I can nail the colbret if he hits my car.

Anyway, I know how you feel. I could go on and on and on for days on this subject but I'll make it brief. I too have sat in my car before and watch how people get in and out of their cars. And I too am stunned that if someone pulls in at an angle they won't back up and then pull forward again to straighten their car. Many times I've seen people get out and fling their door into the car next to them and I cringe whenever I see that. One time I was at the gas station, guy got out of his car in front of me and WACKED! his door right into the pole. Like I mean WACKED!!! It sounded like the door fell off and he didn't even seem fazed by what he just did. Didn't even check his door!

Anyway, about the parking with no cars around you thing: I do that every single damn time I go to the mall. It's true, a few times I've had a POS car park right next to me when 10 surrounding spots were empty (luckily I didn't get hit), but actually more often than not, when I park with no cars next to me I come back and a nice car is parked in the spot next to me. Just at the mall two days ago, parked about 75 spots away from the mall and a 650i parked on my left and a 530i on my right. It was classic!

Anyway, back to the topic at hand:

WHY DIDN'T YOU WAIT THERE UNTIL THE GUY CAME BACK TO HIS CAR!? I would have waited an hour if I had to, assuming I was assured that it was him and his door would line up with the dent when he opened the door. I would have called the police so they could wait with me until the guy arrived.

Anyway, good luck getting it fixed. I know it will happen to me someday, but hopefully I'll get lucky, the guy will still be parked there and he will end up paying for it with enforcement from the police.

This is more than the inevitable door ding... this is the kind of $h!t that re-affirms my belief that we are at the beginning of the decline of the American Empire. When ordinary people stop respecting other people's personal property... where are we?! Europe? Anarchy.

I firmly believe the right for anyone to open their car door ends where those thin white lines on the parking lot asphalt begin!

That is all for now... I must get back to work on my list of grievances.

P.S. Paintless Dent Removal works very well. I had a dent removed from my minivan door. Virtually invisible now but I still have flashbacks. I can never walk up to the van without my eyes being immediately drawn to the ding. Bloody anarchists!

I could've waited there but I didn't see the driver do it and no one else saw it also. I have no proof. Sure the edge of the door matches the location of the door ding. I can accuse the driver all I want but without me seeing the door hit my door or any eyewitnesses, there is nothing I can do.

Not true. You call the police, tell them what happend (but don't say the guy is still inside the mall or else they won't come out) and that there was an accident and you need them to come down so a police report can be filed. Treat it just like any regular car accident. They'll come down and obviously ask where the hell the driver from the other car is and you explain to them what happened and if they can see that the door from the other car lines up perfectly with the dent on your car from what they can see, 9 times out of 10 the police will stay there and wait with you for the guy to come out. When he does, the officer will ask the man to open his door to confirm it lines up and if it does, police report gets filed and the officer will make sure you get the guys insurance info.

I know all of this because I've been through this before ---thank god not with my Bimmer though.
