Road Insurance in Ireland

I'm taking a trip to Ireland in just under a month, and will be renting a car. I was surprised to find out that the collision protection offered by both Mastercard and American Express are NOT VALID in Ireland.

Does the country only allow no-fault insurance or something? Or is it something else about how Ireland insurance underwriting works? Or is it just that the drivers are supposedly crazy, matched with narrow roads?

Honestly, I figured France was the worst driving experience, but maybe Ireland will prove me wrong.

I was just there a couple months back and got a car. I believe I just got the insurance offered by the company. Roads are veeeerrrry narrow in some places and the drivers don't like to slow down on them, almost got hit too many times. Also a lot of 2 lanes that go into 1.5 lanes, down to 1 lane and then it magically becomes a 1-way without any signs. It's fun.

Look out for the CDW (collision damage waiver)also. This will really add to the rental cost. Call master card and ask them if their world master card will cover this. I grew up in Ireland and was back there twice in the last two years. Both times I had my world master card and the CDW was waved.
Last time I was back was last October. I think the CDW costs around $20 a day on top of the rental cost.
Also if you get the world master card call them and tell them you are going to Ireland and that you need them to mail you their standard letter explaining that the WORLD master card covers CDW. When booking the car use the WMC and when you get to the car rental place in Ireland show them the letter and they will wave the CDW.
