18's as Winter Wheels?
Hey guys, I know that there are some dedicated winter tires out there that can go on my stock 18's but at 8/8.5" wide will they really be that good on a RWD car? Is the prevailing wisdom on winter tires that a skinnier tire is better? Should I shop for a set of 17's and dedicate them to the winter months? Does it matter?
Thanks for any advice. |

I've read other threads in here and 18" is no problem. I just recently bought a set of 18" style 220 reps to use for snows. I just have to wait until October to figure out which brand rubber I want to get.

i'm running Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 on stock 189s – 235/40/18 all around. my wheels are staggered on an XI. these are great in the cold and spectacular in the snow.

Thanks everyone. I was concerned that the width would somehow negate the traction provided by the winter tread/compounds but it sounds like a go.

I run my stock 189s as winter wheels with nokian rubber. They run like a dream. 225 widths all around.

225's on an 8.5 inch rim is quite a stretch. I wouldn't recommend it.

Not really much of a stretch IMO and very common to do for winters on the 335. Lots of pics on the forum, so if you're curious about the look, do a search.

I agree with Gary. The 225's have a very slightly stretch on a 8.5" wheel. It is not a problem at all.
