iphone 3.0 software bluetooth music stream
Does anyone know if there is a way to listen to music from the iphone with the new 3.0 software using the bluetoth capability throught the car stereo speakers? I have a 2008 335xi. I've tried but I can not seem to get it working.
Thanks

The car software only supports voice through Bluetooth, not A2DP audio. It's an issue on the car side, not the phone side.

There is a hack you can do but it's not fully supported. Sync your car with your phone via the bluetooth and then make a call. While you're in the call, go to the iPod menu and play a song. The song should be transmitted to the car's stereo along with the voice call. That's if you really wanted to hear your music from the iPhone to your car.

This would make it work, but your steering wheel controls wouldn't work.

I don't use Bluetooth, but I did get a cable I can plug into the AUX input and connect my iPhone using that. I have FStream on the iPhone and can listen to streaming internet radio through the car using that. Sounds great...

Very flat, mediocre sound. Unless you are only listening to audiobooks and podcasts, you will want to plug it in with a wire to the aux jack. You need to plug in anyway too keep the battery charged and stereo bluetooth streaming will make the battery drain faster. I'm thinking of trying it anyway because I think it may be slick way to do handsfree phone calls in a car that doesn't have factory bluetooth since you keep the LiquidAUX under the armrest and out of view and you can use the iPhone's microphone for the calls and have it stream over the car stereo speakers. Since you don't need great dynamic range for phone calls, the stereo bluetooth sound quality will be more than adequate. The video below shows someone using an iPhone plugged into an aux jack and since the LiquidAUX uses the aux input, it should work the same way except without wires. I would still plug the physical wire in to listen to music. Now that the new 3GS is out and has built-in voice dialing, it should be easy enough to use in a car. The trick to it would be to NOT pair the handsfree function to the LiquidAUX since if you do, it would reroute the mic back to the Kensington device and it would be useless under the closed armrest lid. If you only pair it as a wireless headset, then you can still use the iPhone's onoard mic. For those of you speaking about the quality sound using bluetooth, do you attribute this to the A2DP profile, or the Liquid Aux Bluetooth adapter? And have you actually experienced this, or are you speculating? Because I just tried out a 3G 3.0 with A2DP in my Mother's Suburban, and it sounded great. The deck was a bluetooth capable Sony Xplod that was installed in May.

When I plug a physical audio cable into the headphone jack of the same phone playing the exact same track and plug it into the aux input port of the car, the sound "comes to life" and has crisp highs and much deeper/richer bass. Very obvious sound quality difference when you play them back to back. Some people may think it sounds OK through the stereo bluetooth, but they are missing out on the potential sound quality. |

That said, A2DP also provides optional support for pass-through of the source encoded audio (mp3, aac, wma, atrac) for decoding on the sink side. In that case there's zero loss of quality compared to an analog connection. |

It quite obviously is not the source material being played since I said I used the same device playing the same track and switched back and forth from hard wire to bluetooth wireless and there was a great difference in quality. If the source audio was poor, it would have sounded poor even with a cable. |

i wouldnt recommend it regardless, the avrcp profiles for the a2dp audio is ridiculous from apple. you are very limited in what you can do (i.e FF or RR)

I have the hardwired LiquidAUX from Kensington in my car and it works amazingly well. I realize it's not wireless streaming of music, but here's my setup since it solved my needs and may help/solve yours too:
-Aux cable plugs into armrest -LiquidAUX cigarette lighter adapter is plugged into a new hardwired cig adapter I put in behind the dash -iPhone side of the cable pokes out between dash piece and aluminum trim above the radio so I can plug it in while the phone is in the air vent cradle. Pros - Phone plays quality music via the aux in cable, phone is charged via hardwired connection, BT sync works with the car of course and the phone pauses the music while making calls. It may not be "wireless" but it's pretty damn close. Cons - Had to hardwire in an extra cig lighter adapter, guess you don't have to, but mine is completely hidden from view, air vent cradle sometimes falls when I remove my phone. TL;DR - use the hardwired one if you want higher quality sound at a reasonable price and don't mind doing a little work yourself. EDIT - you can see the pics of my "install" in my profile/garage/album thing ![]()
