Is it my imagination or does turning off DTC (1 sec tap on button) make 1st to 2nd shifting smoother? It seems so to me, but how can this be so? I would be interested if anyone esle has noticed this phenomenon!

I'd make the assumption that electronic stability control doesn't affect shifting. Might just be in your head? It will make it smoother if your flooring it because it will let the wheels spin a bit more rather than cut the power.

I think it does help: when turning DSC off (and DTC on), when shifting (under hard acceleration) from 1st to 2nd the engine will not cut the power in order to avoid wheel spin, so the shift is more "natural".

A modded CDV or CDV delete will improve the 1-2 hard shifts better than anything.

+1. I did this a few weeks ago and can't believe I drove the car for a year with the factory CDV....

cstavara - your logioc makes sense. Indeed my feeling is that when DSC ia active it is too invasive - interfers with natural shifting!

If the DSC intervenes that often, you might want to try using a little more finesse with the throttle. Specifically, instead of just flooring it, try to learn at what point you get engine cutback and don't push quite to that point.

In DTC (DSC partially disabled), the ECU applies the rear brakes to keep you from spinning the wheel with the least traction. It's pretty awesome that it does that, but if you do it all the time you're going to wear out your rear pads in short order. Of course it's your call.
