335d oil leak at boost hose
Guys, i was wondering if some one can help me. I noticed a small pool of oil lying on the undertray directly underneath the red flexilbe turbo boost pipe - the one that you can see under the air intake filter box.
I took it to the dealers under the warranty and they renewed some pipe or valve associated with the breather. A few days later the same wet spot appeared and i took it back again - this time to be told it was residue from the last repair that hadent been cleaned properley. Guess what - a few days later the same oil spot has appeared. I took the undertray off this afternoon to have a look my self and can clearly see fresh oil. The oil appears to be running down from the top of the red boost pipe. I tried moving the boost pipe and it does move a 1mm or so at the top only - is this normal ? also when i rev the engine i can see it moving but cant hear any obvious boost leak. I am going to put it back into the dealers for a third time but was wondering if anyone knew what this probably is before i get another cock and bull story from BMW. thanks !!! |

Hi,
This is a known issue with the 335d so don't worry too much. The fix is to replace the red flexi hose and also a breather hose that can become dis-lodged and blocked over time. The hoses have a poor interferrence fit and that is why over a period of time they start to fail, this allows a very small boost leak and will result in a fine film of oil residue building up, this is most visible on the red flexi hose and also on the drip tray. When you next pop into your Dealer tell them that there are "PUMA" cases that are still open reference this issue and that other 335d owners have been affected, but have had this issue recitified. After reading the PUMA cases they will realise that there are a recent new type of hoses that can be fitted, and these should then be fitted to your car. As this has never been flagged as a recall then there will be many 335d owners driving about totally unaware that they have this problem, so if you have a 335d then please check - the place to look is as follows; 1. Open your bonnet 2. Stand just to the drivers side of centre 3. Look straight down in front of you, looking between the front of the engine block (just to the side of the airbox) and the back of the Rad / IC 4. You should be able to see a red flexi hose....check if you can see oil collecting on it, or check just underneath and see if you can see oil resildue on the undertray.....it should be bone dry (unless it's been pouring down, or you've just washed the car and a bit of water is still there) Another thing to check is a breather hose which sits just under the corner (driver side to the front) of the engine cover, there is just enough room for you to check whether it's become dislodged or squeeze it to feel if it is blocked. Read this thread - http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245214 Hope this helps Jules. |

Guys if you ask me the problem is not the hose - it's the oil inside the hose which ideally should not be there. About 90% chance this comes from the closed crankshaft breather.
Check air filter first, and consider some sort of oil catch can (mine breathes free into a plastic canister to minimize environmental impact) cheers, |

The car is going in on Wednesday. I spoke to the service manager and explained the situation and the fact that answers were forthcoming via an internet forum so why did they not know there was a new type hose available. He didnt comment.
I will let you know on wednesday night the outcome. I doubt they will have the hose in stock ( unless they have actually used some intelligence and got one in preperation for wednesday ). I will also take some pictures to show the new type hose once it is done. |

Just so you know, some of the connections seal only under pressure. The one from intercooler out to engine in is one of those. Don't ask me how these seals work.. So on a downward slope you could get an oil leak. And yes i've seen plenty of fresh oil in that area.
You can't blaim BMW, closed crank ventilation is a EC requirement. But there are smarter & more costly solutions such as oil catch tanks. A blocked airfilter will just suck out oil. E90 330D filter layouts and others (I've had two E46 320d's with that design) are horrible in this respect - one average sized leaf can block 90% of your air intake Quote:

After reading this thread, I checked my red hose and it is also covered in black oil - as is the drip tray. Must get it seen to.

Good man, get it sorted sooner rather than later, tell your Dealer that there is a Puma case raised against this issue and you would like the latest version of the hose(s) fitted. I've said this a couple of times before, but............ IF YOU HAVE A 335D THEN PLEASE CHECK THE RED FLEXI HOSE AND DRIP TRAY FOR OIL RESIDUE...... Whilst it may not be a major issue, if left alone then it will become a major issue. Jules. |

Has the level dropped at all? Prob when the car was new and it was over filled of oil or something. If its old it cant be an on-going problem.

The oil that escapes is a fine mist and not oil leaking as in a gasket failing, therefore you are not likely to notice that you are using excess oil.
I would expect that over a long period of time you will lose boost and put extra pressure on the turbo (however, these turbos are very good and are unlikely to be affected). There may also be oil ingress into the Intercooler. Jules. |

update
Got the car inspected yesterday as planned and they confirmed that the seal had gone at the top of the red boost hose. I pointed out to them the info regarding the improved hose and they agreed to renew it as well due to the repeat history of the fault. For your info the part numbers of the new parts are :
11617812274 - charge air line ( flexi red hose) 11618506786 - top seal ( for flexi red hose ) If you clicky this : http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9..._air_duct_agr/ you will see the parts in question Items 1 & 2 heres hoping it is cured this time ! And while is was there i questioned them if i could claim warranty of the door window seal high gloss trims and they have agreed to replace under warranty . Result some good has finally come in the end for all the hastle |
