Khumo SPT Vs General UHP
Simple question....
In the following sizes, which tire would you prefer and why? 245/35/19 275/30/19 I have had generals and had no real problems besides them getting really loud after a while (although I had them for 30kmiles) ' Thanks

i called and the tread wear rating on the UHP is something like 380 compared to the kuhmo which were like 320. i burn through tires so im getting the UHPs curious to see what people say tho.

Kumho SPT are really nice tires.
I run them on my 335i now and I had them on my Evo also. Best bang for the buck. If you want a little more performance I would look into the KUMHO MX and XS tires.

SPT's are definitely a bang for the buck tire. From what I remember, the SPT's are a bit cheaper in most sizes then the UHP's and offer better dry traction.

i heard the Generals have a very "square" sidewall look and are somewhat underperforming. for nearly the same $ you can get the SPT's which are better looking and performing.
again, heresay |

I had SPTs once, bought them for the price and they were nice, but over time they got pretty loud. No complaints considering the price.

ive been running the generals for about a year now and as they wear they are getting rather noisy.
just FYI the generals are one of the lightest tires i've come across. i am running 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 with respective weights of 21 and 24 pounds. the kumho spt in these same sizes weigh in at 26 and 29 pounds - 5 pounds more per corner!! between my tr motorsports mt1 wheels and the general tires i saved nearly 14 pounds in unsprung weight per corner while increasing in diameter and contact patch from my stock 17" wheels! i think they say every pound of unsprung weight is like pulling 4 pounds of weight out of the car = over 200 pounds removed.... |

i think i've got about 12-15k on my set. the fronts still have plenty of meat but the rears are nearing the wear bars. but that includes various burnouts, and lots of tire spin so i can't complain...
i don't really expect a set of dedicated summer performance tires to last me more than a year generally speaking... but everyone drives differently. |

An understatement to say the least. I get a good chuckle seeing these tires on modded out performance oriented cars. Talk about all show, no go.

For the money go with Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110. They finished second in a comparison test in Car and Driver this month. They had very good dry grip and superior wet weather grip. They're also quiet too. Dunlap Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec finished first, but they don't make your sizes. Hankooks come in the sizes you're looking for too.

SPTs are a much better tire than the Generals (which are really all-season).
Cheap tires can really ruin an overall driving experience. Do your research and choose a set that complies with your driving needs.

I bought the Generals once, based on the great Tire Rack Reviews. Man, was I shocked. The good: Decent traction (dry/wet), not much squeel when pushed. The bad They have horid, horid turn in. Soft sidewalls - they really handle pretty poorly. This does give them a "cush" Buick ride though. I had bought them for the wife's car, and they worked great for her. I wouldn't dare to put them on my car though. Its great for a Toyota or Lexus type touring tire. It doesn't belong on a performance car. Gotta take those tire rack surveys with a grain of salt. If you read the comments you may a few of the people actually know what they are talking about and can see through the hype.

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta and call it a day. They're not directional and can be rotated, believe it or not!
Best bang for the buck by far. Watch the video...pretty interesting stuff. Sorry for the pic size...but it's good to be able to see the details. http://www.performanceplustire.com/p...678#prodAnchor [u2b]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KyWMTiXPbLQ&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KyWMTiXPbLQ&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/u2b]

SPT's run a little wider than the Exclaim's and so you'll have a bit more rim/lip protection as well as that extra grip.
I've had about 10k of experience on the SPT's (before they went bald due to my driving habits). I replaced them with Bridgestone RE760 sport. I can say that the ride quality of SPT's are comparable if not better than the Bridgestones. But both General and Kumho SPT give good bang for the buck. |
