Why the trend towards replica/fake parts?

It appears like there has been a growing trend away from authentic aftermarket parts for our cars. I remember "back" in the E46 days when it was about 50/50 as far as people who purchased the "real thing" vs brand x. I dont even think I could buy an authentic ACS piece on this forum if I wanted to, haha. Why has it now become 90/10?

Discuss.

i have an oem front aero lip, but also a replica m3 spoiler... other than pricing reasons, i think some oem parts that forum members want do not fit on the car, so replica's are needed/maded.

The real stuff has gotten out of control pricewise, it doesn't cost the manufacturer any more to make it than a product for a Honda, but because it is going on a BMW, they charge 3 times more than if it is going on a Honda. 15 or 20 years ago, this wasn't so much the case, but once the major producers of aftermarket parts got a good name for themselves, the prices started to go up.

Also, the rep quality has gone up - it used to be a rep was alway 100% junk, but there are a lot of vendors now making some quality pieces that actual fit (not all of them though), so if they make it out of the same material, it fits perfectly and is high quality then they sell - maybe it will eventually make an impact and the real manufacturers will have to adjust their price.

I would honestly like to buy the real thing most of the time and typically do for a lot of stuff, but there are times when it isn't worth 3 or 4 times more money !

That last post pretty well sums it up
In terms of cosmetic parts like the ACS roof spoiler, as mentioned if its made of the same material using the same mold and has a high quality paint job how could you really justify buying authentic? Now when it comes to mechanical parts that is obviously different.

I have found that as the cars age, they become more affordable so people can't really justify spending $1500 on a lip for a 3-4 year old car.

The only thing i can see myself buying OEM other than necessary parts such as spark plugs is a MTECH body kit. As far as i know no one makes a good replica. If im wrong please someone send me a link for a replica mtech kit thats considerably cheaper

$$$ is the major thing. If you can afford to pay for original then do it, but for less you can get a good replica piece, as stated by others, only when it comes to mechanical parts then it pays to get OEM. I'm happy w/ the goodies I got, cosmetic ones, and it was way less then I expected, fitment wise they fit right in w/o issues.
