Firstly, I think it looks sleek and just like a Jag should in black! love the grille.
I'm not 100% sure on the rear. Next to the XF the car looks huge! Didnt appreciate the dimensions from official pics. I also hate the black C pillar. Worse than that, I hate that blue paint lol.

Does being from the UK make you biased towards Jaguar? I really don't see anything to like about this car from a design standpoint, especially when compared with its competitors.

Not at all. Before the XJ was released I couldnt make my mind up between the facelift S class and 7 series. The new XJ is totally new and unique. The rear design hasnt convinced me yet but the front end is a beast yet classy at the same time.

There is a smaller car - the XF.

The surfacing and details look cheap like in the XF. Very soft lines...too soft personally.
Interesting rear bumper. Kinda cluttery. Not sure about the taillights. Not a fan of the C-Pillar. Very modern though. I feel like it'll stand out more.

I agree about the C-pillar, it will look better with dark colours where is becomes less noticeable. I haven't seen it in person yet but rate everything except the tail as near enough perfect, especially the interior which I reckon will make all who sit in the driver's seat feel that they have finally 'made it', something that no other in this sector does, no you need to move up to a Bentley to get a similar effect. The side profile is another area that is less successful, kinda looks stretched even in short wheelbase form so heaven knows what I will make of the long version. Would I buy one if in the market for this kind of car? Answer, Yes. And based on my experience with the XF I can only be of the opinion that the XJ will be better this and the XF is already the best in class. |

The surfacing on the XF and XJ, at least in my eyes, seems somewhat behind modern standards. Not that it's necessary to have complex surfacing, I just find crisply defined, multi-dimensional sheetmetal to have a more upscale look. These cars are on the conservative side, with soft, minimal lines and a focus on proportions and sleekness. There's nothing wrong with that, it just looks less...solid...by comparison. It's the small things too, like the window trim, which looks somewhat plain, or the taillight detailing, which looks a few years behind. Small things, but they just don't jive with my tastes. I'm sure it works for plenty of people though, and I'm sure this XJ will give the segment a serious fight. As with the interior, I'll leave that mostly up to subjective points. I'm getting this feeling that my experience with the XF was misleading, as you and others keep mentioning the high-grade materials which I found otherwise. It was an early demo car, perhaps a little rough or not equipped properly. Regardless, I'm not particularly fond of Jag's interior design, but it is very businessman-like with the proper gadgets and tech to interest the crowd this car caters to. I've really only just become a large fan of BMW and Merc interiors, what with these new gen models coming out. Seems like they're all taking cues from Audi, which is more than a good thing. I wish Jag would follow suit, to a point.

I like the front of the car, but the rest of the car is giving me think they mated an Infiniti Q and Audi. Also, the interior console gives me an odd vibe. I'd like to see it in person before i pass final judgement, but i think i'd take the other large luxury vehicles before this one.

I personally think Ian Callum is overhyped. He was great at Aston, no doubt, but once he breaks away from his typical DB9/AMV8/XF style, there's not much.
